Once you enter the grasp of Marvel, you never get out. Just when you think you’re out, they pull you back in. While it seemed as though we had seen the last of Chris Evans as Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, it seems as though Chris Evans is plotting a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This news comes from Deadline, which says that there is the possibility of a deal that would bring Chris Evans back to Marvel. While Marvel has yet to confirm or deny the rumor, it seems as though this deal would bring back Evans for at least one project, with the possibility of coming back for a second project. Deadline states that the project likely wouldn’t be another Captain America solo film, but could be akin to Robert Downey Jr. appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Captain America: Civil War after wrapping up the Iron Man trilogy.
Deadline also points out that Chris Evans seemed like he was completely done with Marvel, considering Avengers: Endgame ends with him passing on his shield to Anthony Mackie’s Falcon. But it sounds as though throwing out the idea of Evans’ return has made the actor reconsider coming back.
Yet the major question becomes which upcoming Marvel project would see the return of Chris Evans? With the Marvel Cinematic Universe getting ready to unveil the multiverse, likely in WandaVision, there are quite a few possibilities. Yet since both the third Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently filming, it seems unlikely they would cram him in so soon to signing this deal.
However, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Steve Rogers as an old man, after time traveling to the past, where he lived a full life with Peggy Carter. Because of that, any film that takes place in the past could also be up for grabs. It’s unclear if any future projects will also include time travel, but if they do, we could see the young Captain America in one of those films. He could even just simply be appearing in another PSA for Spider-Man 3.
Chris Evans could also possibly make his return for some upcoming Marvel series on Disney+. The obvious choice would have been The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, however, that show completed filming quite some time ago. Loki, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye are all either currently filming or completed, so those seem unlikely as well.
It’s also entirely possible that Chris Evans could return as Captain America in some project that hasn’t even been announced yet. Considering this news comes out the same week that Marvel announced Deadpool 3 is coming, we could theoretically even see Captain America fighting alongside Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
Since leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans has most notably appeared in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, and in the Apple TV+ series, Defending Jacob, which he also produced. Evans will next be seen in Don’t Look Now, the new Adam McKay film for Netflix starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. As for the next time we see Captain America? Only time will tell.
