Disney has released a new trailer for their Pixar prequel offering Lightyear, starring Chris Evans. Per Variety, the trailer gives fans further glimpses of what to expect when the film hits theaters on June 17. This includes new characters and clues as to where the plot is headed.

Chris Evans picks up the baton from Tim Allen, who previously voiced Buzz Lightyear in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story films. In Evans’ iteration of the character, Lightyear invites fans to discover the story of the character behind the toy that appears in Toy Story. Confused? Well, for those who require more information, they can dive into the trailer below.

The previous trailer for Lightyear caused quite a buzz (pun intended) with fans amassing 83 million views in 24 hours. It would be no surprise if this latest trailer eclipses these numbers. In the footage, viewers will learn that ‘Buzz’ and his comrades have been marooned on a strange planet, with Chris Evans Lightyear taking the reigns on a test flight to freedom. Fans are then offered glimpses of confrontation between Buzz and several robotic adversaries in another new world. These adversaries bear a striking resemblance to the villain of Toy Story 2 Zurg, especially the rather large apparent leader of these antagonists. Also, along for the ride is a robotic cat companion called Socks. Who is presumably included to offer Pixar’s trademark comic relief and sell toys for Disney.

Cynicism aside, the trailer boasts some of Pixar’s most impressive animation to date. The studio has come on leaps and bounds since the pioneering Toy Story. Along with a trailer, Disney also released a full cast list for the upcoming Lightyear. Digital Spy report that Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Taika Waititi, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr will be joining Chris Evans for the animation extravaganza. Peter Sohn is the voice behind Socks.  For fans of the Toy Story franchise, Lightyear looks set to be a thrill for many of them. Not least of all is Chris Evans himself, who took to Twitter to mention how grateful he was to of landed the iconic role.

For Evans, Lightyear represents his first major role on the big screen since his glorious turn in Knives Out, back in the fall of 2019. He bowed out as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame just months before and has largely reduced his acting to cameo roles ever since. This means that Lightyear is Chris Evans first real-time in the big box-office spotlight for some time. The same can also be said for Pixar. It has been two years now since a Pixar film has an exclusive cinema release. That was Onward, and since then Pixar films have seen Disney+ take priority with simultaneous streaming/theatre releases or just cutting out the big screen altogether. Lightyear gives Pixar the chance to return to the box-office big time, and theatres everywhere will be hoping Disney stays committed to giving the tentpole animated feature a big swing at cinemas before heading to its streaming home.

For fans, however, what matters most is the content and this trailer shows promise indeed. All will be hoping that Chris Evans and co take expectations to infinity and beyond. Lightyear hits theatres on 17 June, the film is directed by Angus MacLane and produced by Galyn Susman.
