Every Chris Evans Comic Book Character Including Lots Of Non-Marvel Roles
By now, everyone and their mother knows about the abundance of superhero cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine. Out of all of the cameos, the one fans have really been going bananas over is Chris Evans in a forgotten comic book role. For the first time in the MCU, Evans left Cap on the bench and instead reprised his role as Johnny Storm from the early ’00s Fantastic Four movies.
The cameo is a fun nod to Chris Evans’ pre-MCU superhero work, but it doesn’t scratch the surface of his comic book character repertoire. By our count, Evans has played at least seven different comic book characters over the course of his career (technically eight, but we’ll get to that). Without further ado, let’s break ’em down.
Johnny Storm – Fantastic Four
Chris Evans made his comic book debut as the Human Torch in 2005’s Fantastic Four. Two years later, Evans would again flame on in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Then, 17 years after that, against all odds, he returned to the role of Johnny Storm and, according to the star himself, loved every minute of it.
Casey Jones – TMNT
That same year, Evans would lend his voice to hockey-stick-wielding vigilante Casey Jones in the animated TMNT.
For what he was given, Evans did a decent job playing off of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s April O’Neil. Many fans don’t know this, but TMNT is technically a part of the ’90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle film series. That means Evans technically took the role over from Elias Koteas, who played Casey Jones in the first and third live-action Ninja Turtle movies.
Nick Gant – Push
The next comic book role for Chris Evans is kind of a cheat, but strictly speaking, it is a character that appeared in a comic before making the jump to the big screen. So what if the idea for the comic came after the movie was in development? We’re referring, of course, to the 2009 superhero film Push.
Technically, Push was conceived as a film before the studio commissioned an eight-issue prequel comic from DC. Since the comic did come out before the movie, though, and since Chris Evans’s Nick Gant did show up in the comic, we have no choice but to count it. For anyone counting at home, that’s Chris Evans’s comic book character number three.
Lucas Lee – Scott Pilgrim
In 2010, Chris Evans pulled double duty, playing comic book characters in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Losers. In Scott Pilgrim, Evans played professional skater-turned-actor Lucas Lee. Lee himself doubled as both Ramona’s second evil exe and a parody of real-life skateboarder-turned-movie star Jason Lee.
Jensen – The Losers
Meanwhile, for The Losers, Evans channeled his inner nerd into playing intelligence specialist and computer hacker Jensen. The movie was based on a Vertigo comic of the same name about an elite black-ops group and their quest for revenge after being double-crossed by their employer. That’s five Chris Evans comic book characters down, with a few more to go.
Steve Rogers – Captain America: The First Avenger
OK, this next one is the big one. In 2011, Chris Evans made his MCU debut as Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger. While Cap might be Chris Evans’ sixth comic book character, in many ways, it was the only one that mattered. Tony Stark might be the brains of the MCU, but Steve Rogers was its heart.
For almost a decade, Evans portrayed the star-spangled do-gooder. From First Avenger to Endgame, the Massachusetts native appeared in 11 movies wielding his iconic shield. We don’t know if he’ll ever reprise the role, but since Steve Rogers is retired and not dead, there’s always a possibility.
Curtis Everett – Snowpiercer
Chris Evans next played comic book character Curtis Everett in the dystopian thriller Snowpiercer (2013). If you didn’t know that Snowpiercer was a comic first, don’t feel bad—most people didn’t. That’s because the movie was based on a little-known French graphic novel, Le Transpercenige. Welp, that’s seven…
Wait, didn’t we say that technically, Chris Evans played eight comic book characters? Yes. We did. The problem is the last one feels like even more of a cheat than Push.
Loki – Thor: The Dark World
There is a scene in Thor: The Dark World (2013) where Tom Hiddleston’s Loki transforms into Captain America. It’s super brief, barely a cameo. However, according to IMDb and several other articles that, frankly, aren’t anywhere near as good as this one, Chris Evans was playing Loki, playing Cap. Yeah, we told you it was cheap. Still, it does count.
So there you have it, a dive into all eight of Chris Evans’s comic book roles. From the obscure to the mega-popular, there’s no other actor working today quite as adept at representing 2-D characters in live-action. We can’t wait to see what comic book character he plays next.
