Chris Evans recently spoke about the upcoming Ana de Armas movie Blonde. During his interview with Variety (via MovieWeb), Evans predicted that Armas could win big at the Oscars for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe. He also mentioned having seen some of the actress’ camera tests.
“I think this was one of the first opportunities she had to really sink her teeth into something incredibly demanding. I didn’t see one bit of fear; I saw excitement. I remember looking at [her camera test] and saying, ‘OK, that’s Marilyn … where’s your shot? That’s you? Holy sh-t! You’re going to win an Oscar for this!'”
While Chris Evans’s praise for the new movie is comforting, it still doesn’t relieve the massive pressure it has on its lead actress. Many online have criticized Armas’s foreign accent and have already written the movie off. The debate online and the film’s NC-17 rating have taken much of the attention away from what director Andrew Dominik is trying to say.
Chris Evan and Ana de Armas worked together on the Netflix spy thriller The Gray Man. Critics of the film praised Evans and fellow lead actor Ryan Gosling’s performances. They also were impressed with Armas’ turn as CIA agent Dani Miranda.
Despite some critics praising the film, it hit a snag during its second release on the streamer. The action spy thriller initially racked up over 245 million hours of viewing time. However, it soon dropped 60% and suddenly wasn’t on everyone’s radar once other content on streaming started to flood the streaming space.
The controversy surrounding Blonde may take the biopic down a somewhat similar path. Audiences may be interested in seeing what director Andrew Dominik does with the iconic singer, but they may drop off in droves after its first week of release. Chris Evans’s comments regarding Ana de Armas’s performance do give it a bit of hope.
An extended look at the controversial biopic was released online during the summer. The trailer gives us glimpses of what Chris Evans probably saw during Ana de Armas’ camera test. Not only does she capture the same beauty as Marilyn, but she also captures the late actress’ star power and charm while at the same time showing glimpses of her broken soul.
The actress told Netflix Queue that she spent nearly a year studying interviews, films, and photos of Marilyn to prep for the role. She even read the novel that helped inspire the upcoming biopic. It’s an aspect that both Chris Evans and Ana de Armas share in that they commit to their characters onscreen and before the cameras start rolling.
While Blonde is a different kind of movie than the Chris Evans and Ana de Armas Netflix spy thriller The Gray Man, it’s exciting to hear Evans speaking so highly of his former co-star. Evans and Armas also appeared in Rian Johnson’s mystery thriller Knives Out. A sequel to the film starring Daniel Craig is set to premiere on the streamer later this year.
In addition to Knives Out featuring Chris Evans, the Ana de Armas film starred famous horror actress Jamie Lee Curtis. During an interview with Elle, Curtis revealed that she incorrectly believed the Cuban actress had just stepped off a plane and into her first significant Hollywood role. Before Knives Out, Armas already had some major credits, including starring in Blade Runner 2049, War Dogs, and Knock Knock.
Thankfully, Chris Evans has no embarrassing stories about his first meeting with Ana de Armas. At least, not that we know of. Blonde will get a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on September 16th before arriving on Netflix the week afterward.
