Charlize Theron Reveals Netflix Shut Down Superhero Sequel But It’s Not Lost
Charlize Theron confirmed that Netflix’s The Old Guard sequel, aptly named The Old Guard 2—at least for the time being—is still on its way despite numerous delays and post-production shutdowns. Not only that, but the actress hasn’t expressed any concerns about the film’s future, while its producer hints at a potential trilogy, with the upcoming film’s ending setting up the stage for a third installment into what’s shaping out to be a movie franchise.
The Old Guard Was An Underrated Franchise Starter
For those who aren’t familiar with the production of The Old Guard 2, it’s a sequel to one of the best movies featuring Charlize Theron, and Netflix shut it down during post-production at some point. Theron now shares that the movie is still going to come out; the filming was wrapped nearly two years ago despite being shut down five weeks into its post-production phase. According to the actress, the shutdown happened due to internal restructuring at Netflix and the change to its leadership.
New Stars Joining The Sequel
That’s not all; the sequel to Charlize Theron Netflix also has a somewhat troubled production. Netflix greenlit the project in January 2021, and by June 2022, it was announced which members of the original cast would reprise their roles and who had been added to the cast, such as Uma Thurman and Henry Goldberg. Principal photography began in June 2022; in August 2022, the film’s set caught fire, which caused the production to be delayed.
Still, the filming was completed in September 2022, but, unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of a troubled road for The Old Guard 2.
Various Delays Due To Netflix
Namely, the sequel to Charlize Theron’s Netflix hit was then delayed due to the restructuring at Netflix, with the streamer signing various creative partnerships, buying numerous studios, and opening various offices, including one in Poland.
By now, the movie should have been well into post-production, but then, the actors and writers strike happened, and it affected not only The Old Guard 2 but the majority of Hollywood releases. Despite all that, Charlize Theron shared that the movie is going to be released at some point now that the production has picked up.
One Of The Most Watched Movies Of 2020
Audiences have been clamoring for the sequel to Charlize Theron’s Netflix hit for quite some time now, and with a good reason, considering just how great the original movie was. It followed a group of immortal mercenaries led by Charlize Theron’s character, and it’s based on the graphical novel of the same name. There’s no data to indicate how much money the movie made on its $70 budget, which isn’t all that surprising considering that it releases straight to Netflix—but it has become the seventh-most watched movie of 2020.
No Release Date Yet
The original movie now holds an approval rating of 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and its rating is well-deserved since it’s really a good and sophisticated superhero movie with some knockout action sequences led by the Atomic Blonde star. Despite the fact that the production has resumed, the sequel to Charlize Theron’s action hit still doesn’t have a release date—actually, it still doesn’t even have a release window.
