Even though the core of the saga for the Fast & Furious will close after two more movies, that does not mean Universal’s biggest franchise is going anywhere anytime soon. That means spinoffs are coming, and we got word of one that will center on Charlize Theron’s character Cipher.
Variety got confirmation from Vin Diesel. The actor has writers who are currently working on a standalone Fast & Furious film for Charlize Theron.
For fans, it may seem a little odd since Charlize Theron has not had a major role in the franchise. With little character development, it is not the go-to choice for most to then deliver a bigger presence, but with her pedigree, it makes sense to give the Oscar-winning actress the spotlight. With two more installments for the main movies, she has room to grow her character before stepping off to do her own thing.
Charlize Theron could break ground for Fast & Furious in areas as the films have mostly centered on men, but a spinoff is not a new idea. That direction was established in 2019 with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. It saw a focus on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw as they had to put differences aside to duke it out with Brixton Lore, played by Idris Elba.
Debuting in the blockbuster franchise that is full of testosterone, explosions, and cool cars, Charlize Theron came on board with 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. She returned to do the latest entry, F9.
Charlize Theron is no stranger to the action genre. The South African actress made her mark with bombastic characters, huge fireballs, and plenty of high-powered vehicles before Fast & Furious when she co-starred with Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road. She has continued to beat bad guys to a pulp with Atomic Blonde and Netflix’s Old Guard.
There is a mix of things we know and don’t know for the future. Universal’s franchise has kept raising the bar on the craziness it can put together for Fast & Furious. From visiting outer space to dragging vaults through the city streets, the sky is the limit for the last two installments. While we are not certain that Charlize Theron will appear, it is possible with her spinoff on the horizon. What we do know is that Justin Lin will close it out with the next two sequels. The director has been consistent throughout, first starting off with the third entry, Tokyo Drift, and following through with the fourth, fifth, and sixth films.
F9 is in theaters and sees both new and old faces. Charlize Theron, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, Kurt Russell, Helen Mirren, and Natalie Emmanuel reprise their roles. Meanwhile, wrestler and actor John Cena makes his debut.
Despite some delay and COVID-19 being an issue throughout some countries, the ninth entry has pressed on the gas hard as it zooms past the $500 million at the box office. Since 2019, it is one of the highest-grossing movies. The two films that currently top it are Hi Mom with $822 million and Detective Chinatown 3 with $686 million.
