Star Of Marvel’s Best Show Blindsided By Disney Revival
For better or for worse (we fear the latter due to all those reshoots), Charlie Cox will be reprising his famous Marvel role in the upcoming Disney+ show Daredevil: Born Again. Some fans and actors of the previous Daredevil show were doubtful that such a return would be possible, especially after that show so memorably wrapped up six years ago. Interestingly, Cox is one of them: in a recent interview alongside his co-star Vincent D’Onofrio, he admitted it was “shocking” to get invited back because “I completely let go” after the original cancellation.
Daredevil’s Cancellation
The story of Charlie Cox’s original Daredevil show honestly reveals just how much things have changed in the last half-decade, both in terms of the MCU and the streaming landscape.
Originally, his show was the first of Marvel’s grittier TV show spinoffs on Netflix, and it was followed by other beloved series like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
Of course, this was back before Disney had its own streaming service, so it made sense for the corporation to diversify its content, offering more family-friendly shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on network TV and gating more mature fare like Daredevil behind a third-party streaming service.
A Long Four Years
However, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil show ended in 2018, and a little over a year later, Disney+ launched. Initially, though, Cox had no faith that his character could return on the new streaming service: he found out about the original show’s cancellation in early 2018, and while Kevin Feige inquired about bringing the characters back into the MCU in 2020, it wasn’t clear what that would look like.
Notably, the cast for the Daredevil show had stopped filming back in 2016, so it was a very long four years before Cox got the call from Feige.
He Gave Up
According to Charlie Cox, it was during this long wait that he basically gave up on Daredevil ever returning: “I completely let go.” Interestingly enough, it was actually his onscreen rival Vincent D’Onfrio who kept the faith about their characters returning to the MCU. He and Cox would periodically chat about the matter, with the Kingpin actor insisting “Oh, they’re going to call.”
Cox Didn’t Have The Faith D’Onofrio Did
Those frequent reassurances, however, fell on very deaf ears. Charlie Cox later admitted that he’d get off the phone with his Daredevil costar and say to himself “the guy’s delusional” and “He’s got to let it go.”
A blunt D’Onofrio chimed in, saying “It became really pathetic in Charlie’s eyes,” to which Cox admitted that the other man is “right” and that “it was shocking” to finally get the invitation to star in Daredevil: Born Again.
We’ll See How It Goes
Now that Charlie Cox and the fandom have waited six long years for the return of this brooding Marvel hero, the wait is nearly over: Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on Disney+ in March 2025. The show will bring back familiar characters like Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and the Punisher, all while introducing new characters to the MCU like White Tiger (maybe now all those Marvel Snap players can stop asking who she is).
Even with Matt Murdock’s enhanced senses, however, it’s impossible to tell whether the new show will channel the best of the earlier series or if this character should have stayed in Marvel’s rearview mirror.
