A Raunchy Channing Tatum Movie Is Crushing It On Netflix
The Channing Tatum movie adaptation of 21 Jump Street is in the top ten most streamed on Netflix.
The Channing Tatum movie 21 Jump Street is recently having something of a resurgence, much like the actor himself. The movie is gaining new fans thanks to its streaming on Netflix. And right now, this movie is in the Netflix Top 10 for this week.
If you haven’t seen this particular Channing Tatum movie, 21 Jump Street is a film adaptation of a television series that ran from 1987-1991. The premise of both the show and the movie is that two police officers must go undercover as high school students in order to solve crimes. And these days, the original show is most notable for helping to put a young Johnny Depp in the spotlight.
Part of what made this adaptation so notable is how much it deviated from the original source material. The original Johnny Depp show was a dramatic police procedural that played things very, very straight. Meanwhile, the Channing Tatum movie follows a raunchy buddy cop formula intended primarily to make audiences laugh.
To help bridge the gap between the television show and the film Johnny Depp makes a small cameo in this new movie. For the most part, though, the movie follows the misadventures of characters played by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill (soon to make his directorial debut in a movie starring Keanu Reeves). And there are plenty of other familiar faces in the cast, including Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Ice Cube, and many more.
It’s easy to see why a comedy movie featuring sexy Channing Tatum and so many big Hollywood names would be a smash hit on Netflix. However, the element that arguably keeps audiences coming back to this film is that it leans into all of the different raunchy aspects of its premise. As such, the movie manages a delicate balancing act between being a gross-out, bro-centric flick with being a genuinely engaging and even touching film.
And while this is one Channing Tatum movie that was never destined to win an Oscar, you might be surprised at how many awards it has brought home. This includes an MTV Movie Award for Best Music and multiple Teen Choice Awards. This helps illustrate how the movie is a hit with younger audiences, and it makes sense that younger audiences are now discovering the movie on Netflix for the first time.
The original 21 Jump Street movie was a major critical and commercial hit. And its success led to Sony Pictures ordering a sequel movie again starring Channing Tatum and busy Hollywood celeb Jonah Hill. A third film has been announced, and fans are merely hoping that it doesn’t get canceled as previous Jump Street ideas (including an insane team-up between the buddy cups and the Men in Black) have been canceled just as that Tatum Gambit movie was canceled.
Ultimately, this is the perfect time of year for you to cuddle up with a warm cup of coffee, your favorite blanket, and this silly Channing Tatum movie. It’s short on plot and long on laughs, making it a perfect choice to watch while you are wrapping presents or mixing some egg nog. And once you fall in love with this film and its sequel, you can get hyped for the next movie like the rest of us!
