The Channing Tatum Action Movie On Netflix That Has Non-Stop Energy
Channing Tatum has long held his place as one of Hollywood’s hottest heartthrobs for his high-intensity roles in films such as Step Up, 21 Jump Street, and Magic Mike. White House Down, a high-octane action thrill ride starring the former dancer, is currently available to stream on Netflix. After first premiering in theaters in 2013, the film made an immediate impact on streaming audiences this month when it hit Netflix.
Channing Tatum stars in White House Down, an action movie dominating Netflix since it joined the service this month.
Channing Tatum stars in White House Down as a Marine Corps veteran named John Cale. After first facing rejection from the Secret Service and being deemed as unqualified to protect the President, Cale must leap to action during a paramilitary coup, serving as the only line of protection for Jamie Foxx‘s President Sawyer. With the country in peril, the unlikely pair must work together to reach safety in order to prevent a nuclear war.
Despite hitting a stride with modern streaming audiences, the film didn’t open to especially rave reviews. The film follows the trend of many Roland Emmerich movies such as Independence Day, 2012, and Moon Fall, by placing emphasis on visual effects and action over performances and story.
Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx were praised for their excellent on-screen chemistry by critics, though the story, plot, and overall construction of White House Down as a film left many audiences looking for more.
Despite the best efforts of Channing Tatum and other cast members, White House Down failed to bring in the return on investment, the studio had hoped to see.
With a budget of roughly $150 million and only a $73 million domestic box office pull, the movie would have been a certified bomb had it not been for the $205 million made overseas. The film’s box office numbers were also impacted due to the film premiering alongside Olympus Has Fallen, which has a staggeringly similar premise.
Olympus Has Fallen swaps out Channing Tatum for Gerard Butler, and features a team of terrorists staging a coup against the United States, launching a direct assault on the White House, just as White House Down.
Channing Tatum and Gerard Butler went head to head with competing “White House under attack” movies, and while Tatum’s was a critical hit, Butler’s was cheaper to produce.
Despite pulling in less overall at the box office, Olympus Has Fallen managed to make more money due to its significantly smaller production budget, eventually spawning a pair of sequels London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen.
In the years since Channing Tatum appeared in White House Down he has since gone on to a number of other high-profile films, including the hilarious sequel to the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed 21 Jump Street, titled 22 Jump Street.
Tatum also appeared as Superman in The Lego Movie and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, as well as a number of other major motion pictures such as the Wachowski sister’s Jupiter Ascending, the Coen brother’s Hail Caesar, Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight, and most recently Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
What’s Next For Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum is also currently slated to appear in four upcoming films in various stages of active production, according to his IMDb, including the Joseph Gordon-Levitt helmed Wingmen. Wingmen, like White House Down, will see Tatum as a member of the armed forces, serving as an Air Force pilot who crash lands in Las Vegas.
Tatum is also set to lead the Greg Berlanti-directed film Project Artemis, though the plot details are being kept tightly under wraps at this time.
Channing Tatum will also be starring in Zoe Kravitz’ directorial debut, an intense thriller bluntly titled Pussy Island, which sees him hosting lavish and extravagant parties on a mysterious island with a dark secret. While no sequels seem to be in the works for White House Down, the film’s restored fan vigor may revive interest in the project now that it’s found a new home on streaming.
Regardless, if you’re a Channing Tatum fan in need of some high-quality entertainment in the midst of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, White House Down is available to stream on Netflix.
Though the combined power of the striking unions has made ongoing production nearly impossible for any new films or television series, the guilds have not yet called for a consumer boycott of any kind and have even stated that viewing films and television shows on streaming could strengthen their worth to the studios representing the AMPTP.
