The Action Anime That Actually Teaches You About The Human Body

If you’re looking for an anime that’s a little different from the popular shows out there, Cells at Work! might be just the anime to watch. It’s funny and not too complex, making it a great anime to watch on nights when you just want to relax and not think too much. This series is charming, educational, and quite entertaining, making it one of my go-to’s when someone is looking for a new series.

Sekkekkyuu AE3803

Cells at Work! follows the story of a red blood cell as she learns her way around the human body she lives in. Unfortunately, this red blood cell, called Sekkekkyuu AE3803, often gets lost and winds up in trouble.

When she’s in danger, it’s up to white blood cells, T cells, and other defensive parts of the body to step up and protect her. After the job is done and the threat eliminated, the cute little platelets step in to clean up messes.

Great Fight Scenes

Though Cells at Work! seeks to educate viewers about the body, it’s not a boring, stuffy show, nor is it aimed at children. There are some very epic and dark fighting scenes between the good cells and the bad ones. The ending is pretty dark as well and makes viewers feel rather bleak and eager to give their bodies the attention and care they deserve.

Educational

The neatest thing about the anime is that it’s actually very educational. If you don’t know much about biology or are looking for a way to touch up your knowledge about the subject, then Cells at Work! is the perfect series. It’s entertaining, and the information about cells is accurate, if not a little dramatic.

Because of the focus on the human body and cells in the body doing their jobs, the show does get a little repetitive at times. However, the main red blood cell, Sekkekkyuu AE3803, and white blood cell, Hakkekkyuu U-1146, are fairly entertaining characters with a bit more depth than you’d expect from an educational anime.

The Cast

Even the cast is quite impressive. Kana Hanazawa (Break Blade) plays our main red blood cell, and Tomoaki Maeno (Death Parade) plays the white blood cell. Akira Ishida (Accel World), Maria Naganawa (Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid), and Shouya Chiba (Classroom of the Elite) also play supporting characters. The series comes from David Production Studios (Undead Unluck) with Kenichi Suzuki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Drifters) as the director.

Not Perfect, But Not Bad

GFR SCORE

Cells at Work! has a 7.55 on My Anime List, mainly due to its lack of character depth and its repetitive storyline. While it’s not the best show to watch if you’re looking for something intense, it’s a good episodic anime full of several short stories on the life of cells inside your body. I already knew what I was getting into when I watched this anime, and it was exactly as I imagined: not perfect by any means, but it’s a solid anime worth a 4 out of 5 I’d say.

If you’re looking for an educational and funny anime to watch, give Cells at Work! a try on Crunchyroll.
