It has been quite some time since we have seen Cate Blanchett appear as the leading lady in a film. She is usually in a great ensemble cast that includes other actors that are just as good as she is at their craft. However, we have finally been given the first look at her new feature, which is called Tar. Blanchett takes on the role of an orchestral conductor who happens to be a phenom. However, it appears that she might also have some vices that could bring her down. At least, that is what this teaser trailer has indicated. She is billowing out smoke from her mouth as a narrator says, “there are other kinds of plagues that destroy us.” You can see the trailer below:
As previously mentioned, the trailer begins with the puffing of smoke from the mouth of Cate Blanchett. The smoke slowly starts to come out as the narrator speaks about plagues and the global pandemic, likely referring to COVID-19. There is an accompanying sound of a choir that pairs well with the voice speaking. We are then treated to an image of a passionate Blanchett as Lydia Tar, as she conducts her orchestra with fierceness. The camera pans from the bottom of her hair flying about to her facing the orchestra in a few intense moments.
Tar follows the life of Lydia Tar, who is said to be one of the most influential and greatest conductors in the world. She is also the first female chief conductor for a major German orchestra. Cate Blanchett takes on the titular role and is joined by Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Mark Strong, and Allan Corduner. The film will be released in October via Focus Pictures and is said to have heavy Oscar buzz. Hildur Guðnadóttir scored the film. She famously wrote the score for Joker, which led to her becoming the first female composer to win Best Score at the Academy Awards. Todd Field wrote, directed, and is producing the film. This is Field’s return film, as he famously wrote and directed Little Children back in 2006, which netted him an Oscar nomination for Adapted Screenplay.
Cate Blanchett is one of the best actresses in the world, and it is about time that she was placed in a leading role again. Not that the films she has appeared in alongside other great talent haven’t been fantastic. They certainly have been. She was spectacular in Nightmare Alley and Don’t Look Up. We also can’t wait to see her in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and The School for Good and Evil. Both latter films will be debuting on Netflix.
Tar has some massive talent involved in the film, and Cate Blanchett could get some Academy Award nominations for her performance. Though that is a bit early to say being that we have not seen the film, Todd Field certainly knows what he is doing in the filmmaking department. Tar will release in theaters on October 7th, 2022.
