Captain Marvel 2 Gets A Revealing New Title
The title for Captain Marvel 2 hints at some of the upcoming movie's plot.

After being stymied by the pandemic in 2020 that severely delayed their projects, Marvel is now moving forward at full steam. Not only is its slate of streaming shows full, but the studio’s list of theatrical releases is also not far behind as 2021 itself will see the debut of four Marvel Cinematic Universe films and so will 2022. And to celebrate the same, Marvel just released a short video about its upcoming theatrical slate and the best thing is that it presents the new title for Captain Marvel 2, which reveals a very crucial fact about the film.
In the recently released video titled Marvel Celebrates the Movies, wherein all upcoming theatrical films are mentioned in the order of their release dates, the studio announced that the official title of Captain Marvel 2 is going to be The Marvels.
While it doesn’t really reveal much about the plot of the film, the new title for Captain Marvel 2 does confirm that we will definitely be seeing Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Ms Marvel. Monica recently acquired her superpowers in WandaVision and while she is yet to get her “superhero name,” The Marvels seems to be subtly hinting at the fact that at one point in the comics she goes by the name of Captain Marvel. And her addition to the film means that we will be getting more information about why Monica and Carol Danvers, who used to share a strong bond when the former was a child, now have a strained relationship, something which was hinted at in WandaVision.
During WandaVision’s finale’s post-credits scene, we saw a Skrull telling Monica that someone in space is waiting for her. While it was initially speculated that perhaps the mysterious “someone” is Nick Fury, it could very well be Aunty Carol whom Monica will be joining in Captain Marvel 2.
The new title of Captain Marvel 2 also means that Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel will also be joining the team. The character is soon getting her own Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction with the Disney+ series Ms Marvel and it has been confirmed by Kevin Feige that it will lead up to Captain Marvel 2. We already know that Carol Danvers is something of an idol for Kamala- perhaps the series will end with Kamala finally meeting her hero and The Marvels will see the duo reunite against some new deadly villain.
The inclusion of Monica and Kamala in Captain Marvel 2 has already been shared by Parris in a chat with Comicbook.com earlier this year and the new title reveal further confirms. We know that Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta will be directing the film with Megan McDonnell writing the script. Apart from this, details about the plot or cast of The Marvels remain under tight wraps. But perhaps, now that filming of Captain Marvel 2 is all set to begin sometime in May, the studio will be more forthcoming about the details. We’ll be watching to see what they share.
The Marvels is currently scheduled to release in theaters on November 11, 2022.
