It had been announced recently that Anthony Mackie would be taking on the mantle of Captain America in film form. He was introduced into the role at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers passed on the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of the film, which led to the series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Wilson had trouble accepting the role of Captain America with more of an introspective look at racial issues within the role of taking the shield. He accepted it more at the end of the series, with promises to change things for the better. Now, he is set to return in Captain America: New World Order.
Sam Wilson aka Falcon had become Captain America in the comics, and it is great that the MCU is going this route with current continuity. Well, they didn’t have much of a choice considering Chris Evans wanted to step away from the role. Now we get to see Mackie inhabit the role completely, and likely for the future of Phase 5 and 6 of the MCU. There are two Avengers films planned and Captain America has always been a part of the Avengers. Wilson has some big shoes to fill, and it seems that story is going to be carried over from his struggles in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Captain America: New World Order will certainly bring in a much different version of the character.
Head writer for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Malcolm Spellman, is writing the script for Captain America: New World Order. Directing the new film is Julius Onah, who had previously received fame from directing The Cloverfield Paradox. It will be Onah’s MCU debut. Not much is known about the plot so far, other than the previously mentioned struggles that Sam Wilson will see taking up the role of Captain America. The new film is meant to address the statement of, “what makes somebody Captain America.”
According to the reveals at San Diego Comic-Con, Phase 5 of the MCU is going to wrap up with the newly announced Thunderbolts film in the summer of 2024. But before that, we are going to be seeing Captain America: New World Order. This could mean that some of the Thunderbolts team are going to appear in that film. The Thunderbolts are led by Citizen V, who is Baron Zemo. Zemo, as we know, was brought back in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He escaped, naturally, and could reappear to lead this new Thunderbolts team in the new film. This new world order that is spoken of might just be the villainous Thunderbolts team posing as the saviors of the MCU.
Captain America: New World Order is far away from debuting, as the film is not going to be released for another two years. However, we are more than excited to see the previous MCU entries leading up to this new film. Although Steve Rogers is gone, the ideology of Captain America can continue through Sam Wilson. He clearly is going to struggle with the identity of being such an honored superhero, but he will likely have to put those struggles aside to save the world from the many incoming threats.
