Captain America: Brave New World Cuts Entire Villain Group, Footage Scrapped
It seems like the changes are still coming for Captain America: Brave New World. The X account MarvelFilmNews has reported that the villainous group known as The Serpent Society has been completely removed from the film. Apparently, the group had scenes that would give us the first major action piece with Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Danny Ramirez’s Falcon, and Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley.
Major Changes Coming
While it appears The Serpent Society is getting completely cut from Captain America: Brave New World, the report also says that Rosa Salazar’s character, Diamondback, might still make the final cut.
Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed who Salazar is playing in the film, but rumors indicate her role would be Diamondback.
Seth Rollins was also rumored to be playing a member of The Serpent Society, which would mean his role might be gone altogether.
The Serpent Society
For those who don’t know, The Serpent Society is a group of villains with snake-themed powers that essentially act as villains for hire.
This leads to the Serpent Society frequently clashing with heroes like Captain America, making them a good fit for Captain America: Brave New World as a minor threat that establishes the heroes’ competency. Perhaps the action scene was cut for time, but, likely, we won’t find out the exact reason these scenes were deemed unworthy of screens.
Captain America: Brave New World Reshoots
It seems likely that these Serpent Society scenes are a casualty of the major reshoots that Captain America: Brave New World is undergoing after reports of poor test screenings.
Those reports said that the film would remove three major sequences and that reshoots would be ongoing from May 2024 to August. Writer Matthew Orton was also hired in December to write additional material for the reshoots.
Going Through Changes
At this point, Captain America: Brave New World is no stranger to change. The film has already changed its original subtitle of New World Order after Marvel was made aware of that title’s unsavory connections to conspiracy theories and anti-semitic rhetoric.
The film has also gone through multiple release date changes after it was originally scheduled for a May 3, 2024 release.
Anthony Mackie As Captain America
Captain America: Brave New World has a lot of pressure on it, so it’s not too surprising that it’s facing all these reshoots and pushback.
It will be Anthony Mackie’s big-screen debut as Captain America after Sam Wilson officially took the mantle in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Also, it will be bringing back both Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross from the OG MCU film, The Incredible Hulk.
Captain America: Brave New World Cast
Along with Mackie, Nelson, and Tyler, Captain America: Brave New World will also star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Shira Haas as Sabra, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over the role from the late William Hurt.
Julius Onah is directing. Captain America: Brave New World will be released on February 14, 2025, when it finally hits theaters.
