According to Deadline, the final season of Sex Education, Netflix’s teen sex comedy-drama, has become the streamer’s highest-rated series launch of the year thus far. The ratings of the show were made public by Barb, the UK’s official audience research group. The Season 4 premiere was watched by nearly 3 million people in the week leading up to September 24, with the second episode witnessed by nearly 2.5 million viewers.

This means that Sex Education outperformed At Home With the Furys, the documentary series on Tyson Fury. What’s even more interesting is the fact that Sex Education Season 1 has secured the ninth spot on Netflix’s top 10 charts, making it one of the most-watched English language series this month.

Season 4 of Sex Education also included new names to its main cast, prompting renewed interest in the show, which ultimately led to high ratings.

It’s also worth noting that the figures published by Barb only include people watching Netflix’s series on television sets. This means that the viewership on mobile devices and web browsers isn’t included in the final number.

Whatever the case may be, Sex Education continues to top Netflix’s TV rating charts for two weeks in a row now. This isn’t all that surprising considering that the series stars an ensemble cast that includes Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, Thaddea Graham, Aimee Lou Wood, X-Files’ Gillian Anderson, and upcoming Doctor Who‘s Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

In the UK, Sex Education was Netflix’s most-watched series launch of 2023.

Netflix’s Season 4 of Sex Education also included new names to its main cast, prompting renewed interest in the show, which ultimately led to high ratings. These names include Jack Gleeson, who made a surprising appearance on the small screens following his decision to retire from acting in 2014, right when he was at the top of his acting game.

Making a breakthrough as one of the most hated villains on television is bound to have some consequences, so Gleeson decided to quit television and cinematic work and dedicate his talents to theatre.

Jack Gleeson in Sex Education

If you still don’t know who we’re referring to, Jack Gleeson first rose to prominence as Joffrey Baratheon in the massively popular Game of Thrones series. Joffrey was one of the show’s most irredeemable villains, and though Gleeson joined the cast at very early stages of his career, he managed to convey all the rage and perversion associated with the character, which only attested to the young actor’s range. He stayed under the radar ever since, but his appearance in Netflix’s Sex Education might indicate Gleeson’s return to small screens.

Sex Education reached critical acclaim due to the performances of its cast, its writing, direction, production value, and mature treatment of themes. The show has been very successful, with over 40 million viewers streaming the first season following its debut—and Season 1 performed the weakest among the critics.

Sex Education Canceled At Netflix

However, despite a very successful run, Netflix decided to say goodbye to Sex Education with its fourth and final season, and the show’s emotional ending gave closure to several storylines, leaving the fandom of the show emotionally satisfied.

As for why Netflix decided to call it quits on Sex Education, well, that remains a mystery. Perhaps it was always planned as a four-season series, or perhaps they tied everything up together before Gatwa’s departure in the TARDIS.
