Ryan Reynolds recently confirmed that the third installment of Deadpool is on the way, with Hugh Jackman joining the cast as Wolverine. But T.J Miller, who portrayed Weasel in the first two films, says he won’t be returning to the franchise. The comedian made the revelation on The Adam Carolla Show while promoting his new stand-up special called Dear Jonah.
When the conversation veered to the Deadpool universe, Miller said his days working with Ryan Reynolds are over, adding that his wife is convinced his former co-star hates him. He went on recall a time when he said it was good that Reynolds’ face is covered while playing the anti-hero because the actor is so good-looking that no one wants to laugh at him.
The backhanded compliment was made on a show called Hot Ones, OutKick reports. Miller then went on to imply that Ryan Reynolds changed after Deadpool fame. “After he got super, super famous from the first movie, things kind of changed.” That’s when he said he wouldn’t work with him again. When asked to elaborate about the “vitriol,” he backtracked a little by saying he once said something similar about director Michael Bay, but that he’s still friends with him.
But that wasn’t the end of the Ryan Reynolds discussion. When the host asked Miller if he was sure the Free Guy star hated him, the comedian mentioned something that happened on set. He said they were riffing in character while shooting a final take of a scene for one of the films when the Deadpool actor started throwing shade that seemed to be rooted in the real world. “I got offstage and I walked over, and the whole crew was acting weird,” he said.
Miller explained that it was because this wasn’t the sort of thing Ryan Reynolds would normally do. It remains to be seen if the pair can bury the hatchet before the production begins. Although the development process for Deadpool 3 seemed to be taking forever, things are finally starting to take shape. According to Variety, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who worked on the first two movies, will write the script. Shawn Levy will handle directing duties.
Besides Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, no other cast members have been confirmed for the third installment. The second Deadpool movie featured Morena Baccarin as Vanessa and T.J. Miller as Weasel. It also introduced Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. So perhaps we can expect to see some of these characters return – even though it seems like Miller is out.
Based on the X-Men comic book character created by Rob Liefeld, the Deadpool movies have separately earned over $780 million at the global box office. When Disney acquired Fox, fans were afraid that the studio would try to maintain its family-friendly image by cleaning up the character. But Disney’s chairman and CEO at the time dismissed those concerns saying the company would continue to make R-rated Deadpool films starring Ryan Reynolds and tell other adult-oriented stories.
The release date for the highly anticipated Ryan Reynolds-led feature is September 6, 2024, and with Hugh Jackman on board, Deadpool 3 is sure to be a hit with fans.
