Cameron Diaz is finally returning to acting with the upcoming film Back in Action, but you can now stream one of her biggest early hits on Freevee in the meantime. There’s Something About Mary is free to stream right now and it’s the 1998 breakthrough film that helped launch Diaz’s huge run of popular films through the early 2000s. It’s a comedy that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you don’t mind your comedies raunchy and filled with problematic stalkers, this might be worth throwing on for a movie night.

There’s Something About Mary follows Ted (Ben Stiller), a man who is never able to go to prom with his dream girl Mary (Cameron Diaz) due to an unfortunate private part-related accident. Thirteen years later, Ted hires a PI named Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find Mary. Unfortunately for Ted, Healy falls in love with Mary too and Ted has to work through the obstacles of other stalkers to win Mary back.

Along with Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, and Matt Dillon There’s Something About Mary starred Lee Evans, Chris Elliott, Lin Shaye, Jeffrey Tambor, Keith David, Sarah Silverman, and more. The film was directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly. The Farrellys also co-wrote the script with Ed Decter and John J. Strauss.

There’s Something About Mary was another big comedic hit from Peter and Bobby Farrelly after they found major success with their directorial debut Dumb and Dumber. The two would go on to make some other early 2000 comedy hits like Me, Myself, and Irene and Shallow Hal but combining their comedic sensibilities with the charisma of Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller was definitely late 90s magic. There’s Something About Mary was a major hit both critically and commercially.

There’s Something About Mary managed to rake in the big bucks, bringing in $369 million worldwide on a budget of $23 million. In 1998, it was the third-highest-grossing film in North America and the fourth-highest-grossing film globally. This film would launch Cameron Diaz into the stratosphere and start her streak of being one of Hollywood’s most bankable actresses.

The film was not only a box office smash but received warm reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film currently has an 83% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 61% audience score. Most reviews agree that Cameron Diaz is key to the film’s success along with the Farrelly Brothers’ penchant for low-brow humor and laughs.

There’s Something About Mary is certainly a product of its time and it really captures that late 90s/early 2000s nostalgic energy of movies from that era. At a breezy 119 minutes, it’s an easy movie to throw on in the background or for a lighthearted watch if you missed out on this Cameron Diaz smash hit or if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it. Plus it’s free to stream, so you don’t have much to lose if you do want to check it out.

If you want a real one-two punch that gives you tonal whiplash, you can check out Cameron Diaz’s most popular 1999 movie which came out a year after Something About Mary. Diaz followed up the raunchy Farrelly comedy with a much more surreal and fantastical comedy in Being John Malkovich. Being John Malkovich was the feature film debut of Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, so it’s well worth checking out.

Since There’s Something About Mary came out, Cameron Diaz owned the 2000s with films like Charlie’s Angels, Shrek, Gangs of New York, and many more. In 2014, Diaz starred in three films including The Other Woman, Sex Tape, and Annie. Following this streak of films, Diaz decided to take an extended break from acting.

Cameron Diaz would very briefly return to acting for a 2020 video short called Boss Bitch Fight Challenge, which saw director Zoe Bell picking a fight with various other “Boss Bitch” friends during the pandemic. The short also starred Lucy Lawless, Drew Barrymore, Rosario Dawson, Kaitlin Olson, Florence Pugh, and many more. While fans were excited to see Diaz again, this wasn’t her grand return to acting that people were waiting for.

Finally, in 2022 we’ll be seeing Cameron Diaz co-star with Jamie Foxx in the Netflix action-comedy Back in Action. The film is directed by Seth Gordon who also co-writes the script with Brendan O’Brien. There’s no word on a release date yet, but we’ve waited this long for Diaz to return, so we can probably wait a little longer.
