Buffy The Vampire Slayer Actor Blatantly Insults Former Co-Star

In the wake of allegations that have arisen not only from actors who worked with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator on the set of Justice League, but from former Buffy and Angel star Charisma Carpenter, fans of the work of Joss Whedon have been forced to re-examine their fandom. Can you remain a fan of a show that was supposed to represent feminist ideals when the guy running things allegedly fired a woman for getting pregnant? On the other hand, is it unfair to forget the good that Buffy did, especially when Whedon was only one of so many people who helped bring it to the screen? In the middle of all of these big, important questions and more, comes a much more base, Maury-Povich-level feud, courtesy of former Buffy stars Nicholas Brendon and David Boreanaz.
The smack talk in question is reproduced in the new book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts by Evan Ross Katz (via Screen Rant). The author spoke to many of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars as well as writers and fans. In the case of Brendon, the actor had nothing but harsh words for the spin-off show Angel. “It was weird that Angel got a spin-off. Because how does the most boring character in TV history get a spin-off? Why don’t we break down Angel? Uh, no, there’s nothing to break down. It’s just a brooding little guy.”
Well, okay, he didn’t like Angel. That’s not a crime, right? It isn’t like he specifically went after the Angel actor, David Boreanaz, who starred in three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But, see, then Brendon continues, “Angel, in my opinion, is worse than those Twilight f––ers. I’m not sure if I’m talking about David or Angel at this point now.”
We don’t know when the hate between Nicholas Brendon and David Boreanaz began, but it’s been brewing since at least 2017. During a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Q&A panel at the Wales Comic Con that Brendon shared with Emma Caulfield, the actors were asked what it was like to attend the 20 year reunion photo shoot organized by Entertainment Weekly in September 2017. Caulfield’s answer was filled with the kind of nostalgia and joy you would expect, while Brendon’s experience was apparently marred by his former co-star. After a few moments’ hesitation, Brendon told the crowd he had a much later call to the photo shoot because Boreanaz allegedly didn’t want him there. You can see that panel below.
Nicholas Brendon apparently doesn’t know why his fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum didn’t want him at the reunion photoshoot, but one possibility that seems likely is that it has something to do with Brendon’s public battles with substance abuse and his run-ins with the law. Between 2010 and 2017, Brendon was arrested over a half dozen times. Two years before the photoshoot, he was arrested for allegedly attacking a woman in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was also accused of stealing her car keys and destroying her mobile phone. Whether or not that’s Boreanaz’s problem, we don’t know. All that’s sure is that the pair apparently don’t like each other any more than their characters did.
