See Bryan Cranston Take Over As Mr. Freeze For New Batman Project
Mr. Freeze is rumored to appear in an upcoming Batman project, and imaginative artwork proves that Bryan Cranston is a perfect choice.
Prepare for chills. Rumors circulating the internet suggest that Mr. Freeze will haunt a new Batman project soon, perhaps even for Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. Giant Freakin Robot created artwork that offered a casting suggestion for the cold-blooded villain with a rendering of Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston as Mr. Freeze.
Created by Bob Kane, David Wood, and Sheldon Moldoff, Mr. Freeze first appeared in comics as Mr. Zero in 1959. His name was changed to Mr. Freeze in the 1960s Batman series. The character was a gimmick at first, and spent many years as a mere thief; Bryan Cranston would likely take on a version of Mr. Freeze popularized in the 1990s.
Paul Dini wrote Heart of Ice, the episode of Batman: The Animated Series that redefined Mr. Freeze as a tragic character on a morally dubious quest to save his terminally ill wife, Nora. As a self-proclaimed man without emotion, Freeze is a villain spurred by love. This version of the character became the standard interpretation in comics, film, and television, and Bryan Cranston would be perfect for bringing the tragedy of Mr. Freeze to the big screen.
This is not the first time Cranston has been fancast in a superhero movie role. Another artist offered a brilliant rendition of what the Malcolm in the Middle actor would look like as Gotham Police Commissioner Gordon. Bryan Cranston has proven his acting chops time and time again, and while his range could certainly make him a great Gordon, the menace he displayed in Breaking Bad would make him a brilliant Mr. Freeze.
Bryan Cranston as Mr. Freeze is speculation for now, but the actor has several bat-less projects on the way. Cranston is set to appear later this year in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, a star-studded film about a junior stargazers convention gone wrong. Cranston will star alongside Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Hong Chau, Edward Norton, Scarlett Johansson, Adrien Brody, Maya Hawke, and Steve Carell.
Bryan Cranston will also star with Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard in Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller Argylle in 2023. Plot details for the film are unknown beyond the film being a globetrotting espionage adventure. And before Bryan Cranston can cool off as Mr. Freeze, his hot streak continues with Mila Kunis in Jackpot, a remake of a Norwegian film in which a group turns to violence while disputing how to split the winnings of a million-dollar jackpot.
Matt Reeves and DC are keeping a tight lid on the future of Gotham City. Whether Bryan Cranston, or anyone, for that matter, will take on the mantle of Mr. Freeze in Reeves’ Batman universe is a case fit for the World’s Greatest Detective. We once saw Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the role, but that is likely to never happen again. In any case, Cranston fans have plenty of intriguing projects from the actor to look forward to.
Bryan Cranston also stars in the Showtime series Your Honor, now halfway through its second season. The series features Cranston as a judge whose convictions are tested after his son is involved in a hit-and-run. New episodes air on Showtime, and the first season is available to stream on Paramount+.
