Brooklyn Nine-Nine Reunion Leads To Andre Braugher Tribute
The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine met for a reunion dinner in March of this year. Not only was the dinner a way for all of the actors to catch up again a few years after the show ended, but it also allowed them to celebrate and remember Andre Braugher, who played Captain Holt throughout the series. Unfortunately, he passed away in December of 2023 after battling lung cancer.
Brooklyn 99 Reunion
All of the actors grew very close during their time filming. While sometimes, working together in close quarters can create tension, that wasn’t the case with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Instead, the entire main cast grew to be close friends who loved each other dearly.
Their strong relationship made the death of Braugher even more devastating, so when the team came together for a bonding dinner, they didn’t hesitate to bring up their dearly missed friend.
Tribute To Andre Braugher
Their strong relationship made Braugher’s death even more devastating, so when the team came together for a bonding dinner, they didn’t hesitate to mention their dearly missed friend.
His death came as a surprise for everyone. Braugher had been fighting lung cancer for a while, but he did not share the information with many people, especially not fans. When he first passed, the reason was said to be due to a “brief illness,” but Braugher’s longtime publicist, Jennifer Allen, later confirmed that lung cancer was the actual cause.
The Amazing Ensemble
Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta), Stepanie Beatriz (Rosa Diaz), Terry Crews (Terry Jeffords), Melissa Fumero (Amy Santiago), Joe Lo Truglio (Charles Boyle), Birk Blocker (Hitchcock), Joel McKinnon Miller (Scully), and Chelsea Peretti (Gina Linetti) all attended the dinner, with a few of the cast posting pictures on social media, and even tagging Braugher’s accounts.
Tributes From Co-Stars
The reunion dinner comes three years after the show ended. Brooklyn Nine-Nine ran for eight seasons, from 2013 to 2021. For a sitcom, this is a pretty impressive length of time, and it’s really no surprise that the crew began to see themselves as friends and family.
Both Stephanie Beatriz and Terry Crews talked about the dinner during interviews. Beatriz mentioned the entire cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine at the Hulu on Disney+ launch event on April 5 in Los Angeles.
“We all love each other very dearly. I’ll never let those people go. They can try and get rid of me, but it’s not going to happen.” She didn’t fail to talk about her late cast member either: “And it was also a chance to talk about Andre. It came up immediately, and then we put it away for a while,” she continues. “But at the end of the dinner, by the end, we were all just sharing stories about him and our memories of him. And he lives in our hearts forever and ever.”
Reflecting On Time Together
Crews spoke to PEOPLE a few days after the dinner, “We laughed, we cried, we missed Andre Braugher, who we lost a few months ago.” He continued, “It was our time to reminisce and just think about how special our time together was.”
This wasn’t the only time that the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine publicly talked about how much they missed Braugher. Shortly after his death was announced, many of the actors used social media to express how much they missed him.
Outpouring Of Love
Peretti wrote on Instagram, “I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick. Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t.”
Loved By All
Marc Evan Jackson, who played the Holt’s husband, Kevin, in Brooklyn Nine-Nine posted a short and sweet tweet on X. It contained a picture of the two of them on set and the caption, “O Captain. My Captain.”
He also had a lot to say to PEOPLE about his friend, saying, “Andre elevated every moment he came anywhere near, and it was an honor to have known and worked with him,” he continued. “My deepest condolences to his family, and all those who like all of us, loved him very much.”
