One Of The Biggest Music Stars Of All Time Finally Gets Biopic
Hollywood biopics are truly one of the most controversial subjects in cinema, as audiences and critics frequently clash about the accuracy and realism behind the on-screen depictions. Now, according to a report in NBC News, Britney Spears will serve as the subject of an upcoming biopic, fully authorized and endorsed by the “Toxic” singer herself. It’s a great time for such a project, because if it had been made even as little as three years ago, we’d be getting a much different story tainted by Spears’ family.
The Director
The Britney Spears biopic is being produced by Universal Pictures, and Jon M. Chu is already attached to direct. Chu holds a number of impressive directing credits in his catalogue, including feature-length films such as Now You See Me 2, Crazy Rich Asians, and the upcoming Wicked two-part film adaptation starring Ariana Grande, which is set to premiere in November.
The director has also worked on a number of music videos and other projects with A-list pop stars, including collaborations with Justin Bieber, Cassie, and Nicki Minaj.
The Casting
No actresses have been officially cast in the Britney Spears biopic just yet, though fans across social media have already begun throwing out support for their preferred performers, with names such as Addison Rae, Millie Bobby Brown, and Michelle Williams leading the pack.
While there’s no way of knowing exactly which other famous people will appear as characters in the film, fans are expecting casting news for a Justin Timberlake performer, as well as Colin Farrell, Kevin Federline, and Britney’s younger sister Jamie-Lynn Spears.
The Woman In Me
The film will adapt Britney Spears’ life story in her own words, as the biopic is set to follow her 2023 memoir The Woman In Me. This has already raised significant support from many fans, as the pop singer was famously restrained by an extremely stifling conservatorship for many years, which prevented her from publicly speaking on her own behalf and controlling her finances and art.
With her November 2021 release from the conservatorship, Spears was finally able to tell her own story, which hopefully means that the upcoming movie won’t be a complete disaster.
The Conservatorship
As Spears confirms in the text of The Woman In Me, her family allegedly systemically fed her a cocktail of numbing medications to keep her subservient, maintained child locks on her cell phone, and monitored her at all times, creating something of an Orwellian prison from the age of 27 to 40.
Obviously, had a Britney Spears biopic been greenlit just a few short years ago, the events of the film would be controlled by her domineering family, and likely would have depicted the artist as mentally ill, unreliable, and in need of general oversight, which would only serve to strengthen her family’s claim that she needs to be kept under their control.
More News To Come
Britney Spears will reportedly be involved with the production of the film on some level, though reports have not specified her as a direct producer at this time. With any luck, this will mean that the film can present a real and genuine look at the controversial singer, without flinching away from her low points, while still respecting her growth and hardship.
For now, not much is known about the Britney Spears biopic, though new details are sure to come in the next few months.
