Brie Larson’s The Marvels Trailer Is Breaking Records For Dislikes

After a lukewarm reception to the recent film Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, some Marvel fans are worried about the direction of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, some alarming numbers are coming out about one of Marvel’s upcoming properties. According to the most recent numbers from the teaser’s release on YouTube, Brie Larson’s The Marvels has been receiving a record number of dislikes on Youtube.
Brie Larson’s The Marvels recently released its teaser on April 11, but it has received a record number of dislikes on YouTube. At the time of this writing, the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel’s teaser page has a somewhat positive like/dislike ratio of roughly 331k likes to about 228k dislikes. Other channels, however, saw an overwhelmingly poor response, with Rotten Tomatoes’ YouTube teaser receiving 4.3k likes to 20k dislikes, while IGN’s YouTube release faired poorly as well, with a ratio of 8.7k likes to 20k dislikes.
One YouTube commenter named Keyser noted that it “Really looks more like a sitcom from CW than a Marvel movie.”
Another user named J C was also critical, stating: “Direct to streaming. No way they risk the embarrassment of a cinema release.” All of this signifies what could be a historically poor fan reaction to the teaser, one that is only outpaced in the MCU by the official She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer.
The Brie Larson-led teaser begins with Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) exploring space and coming into contact with something called a “jump-point perimeter” during a Nick Fury-led (Samuel L. Jackson) mission. Just as she approaches it, she gets sent flying back, although, to the viewer’s surprise, it is no longer Rambeau, but Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who appears to have swapped places with her somehow.
Captain Rambeau herself lands on an alien planet in the middle of combat with a host of alien warriors. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is then seen transported into Kamala Khan’s bedroom, where she observes the only somewhat creepy amount of Captain Marvel paraphernalia the young teen has amassed over the years.
With the three leads switching places multiple times throughout the teaser because of what is described as their “entangled” powers and a cameo from Captain Marvel’s pet, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers has to lead the way through an intergalactic mission to restore balance.
The teaser of the Brie Larson-led film projects to have a lighter air more in line with films in the Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises than some of the more serious films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These dislike numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, as many fans have had a backlash against the lighter tone of the Marvel films. Brie Larson has also specifically been a target of many Marvel fans, and the original Captain Marvel was rating bombed because of Larson’s connection to feminist ideology and her willingness to speak out on social issues, although many cite her poor acting and attitude as the reason for the poor reviews.
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was the first female-led movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite criticism, Captain Marvel was one of the MCU’s more commercially and critically successful films, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide at the box office. It’s very possible that The Marvels, which features three female leads, could be facing a similar backlash and an uphill battle from internet trolls and others who feel uncomfortable with ongoing efforts from Marvel to provide more inclusive representation onscreen.
