Brie Larson Is Not Happy In The Marvels Trailer
Brie Larson's Captain Marvel appears quite unpleased throughout The Marvels' teaser trailer.
Disney just dropped the trailer for The Marvels, and one particular Marvel doesn’t look thrilled. Brie Larson spends most of The Marvels trailer looking pissed off and over it, but she’s got a good reason. It appears that anytime she or any of the other two Marvels use their powers, they switch places.
Anyone would be a little testy if they were fighting aliens one moment and suddenly in the middle of a suburban family’s living room the next. That’s exactly what happens to Brie Larson in The Marvels trailer. At one point, Captain Marvel is suddenly transported into the home of Ms. Marvel‘s Kamala Khan while the teenage superhero in training winds up stranded on an alien ship next to a Lovecraftian horror disguised as a cat.
The trailer wisely gives no indication of what’s causing the bodies of the three women to switch places, only that it seems to be related to their powers. Brie Larson isn’t the only one looking a bit put out in The Marvels trailer. Monica Rambeau, played once again by Teyonah Parris, also seems to be pretty upset about being displaced every time one of her co-Marvels shoots a blast of energy.
In fact, the only one enjoying themself seems to be Iman Vellani‘s, Kamala Khan. Vellani gives Kamala the same youthful exuberance that she had in the Disney+ Ms. Marvel series. Kamala’s overly cheerful demeanor clashes dramatically with Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris’s weariness in The Marvels trailer.
It doesn’t help, of course, that Captain Marvel’s first exposure to her pint-sized admirer comes when Brie Larson suddenly pop’s into Khan’s room unexpectedly. Judging by Larson’s reaction to the Captain Marvel shrine Kamala has turned her bedroom into, it’s safe to say the Captain is far from flattered. The Marvels trailer cuts away just as Captain Marvel says, “What the…” leaving fans to wonder which expletive she was about to utter.
The Marvels was directed by Nia Dacosta, making it one of the few movies in the MCU to be directed by a woman or POC. According to her IMDb, Dacosta only has two other feature film directing credits under her belt, 2021’s Candyman reboot and 2018’s crime drama Little Woods. The Marvels seems to be Dacosta’s first comedic film, but going by the trailer she’s nailing the tone perfectly.
Fans that know their superhero movies know that the three heroes will eventually get their powers sorted out and come together to fight some big bad, but from what is shown in the trailer, it’s not a quick alliance. We see that Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khan, and Captain Marvel do wind up on a spaceship together at one point, but in the clip, Brie Larson is quick to point out, “We are not a team.” It’s a sentiment shared by Rambeau in The Marvels trailer but not the gungho Kamala Khan.
Anyone that watched Ms. Marvel knows that fighting alongside Captain Marvel is a dream come true for Khan. Not once but twice in the trailer, the youngest Marvel inquires as to her status as an Avenger. Unfortunately, given the dour expressions worn by everybody but Khan throughout the trailer, she’s probably going to have to ask a lot more than twice.
Brie Larson and The Marvels will hit theaters on November 10, 2023.
