Brendan Fraser Under Fire For Killers Of The Flower Moon Performance, Martin Scorsese Defends Him
Now heading into its third weekend in theaters, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has been praised as a perfectly filmed and acted historical drama by some and an unnecessary telling of hurt and pain by others. Outside of the criticism facing the film’s source material, Academy Award winner Brendan Fraser has also been catching heat from viewers for his portrayal of W.S. Hamilton.
Stepping up to the plate to defend the actor during a recent press conference (as per Binge Hulu), Scorsese is standing by Fraser’s work, even referring to it as a “perfect” representation of the character.
Brendan Fraser’s Portrayal Of W.S. Hamilton Is Thought To Be Over-The-Top By Some
The criticism of Brendan Fraser’s performance centers around viewers believing that he went a little over the top with the portrayal of his character who is the lawyer for Robert De Niro’s William Hale. The main scene in question is during a courtroom session that sees De Niro’s Hale and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart on trial for the murders in the Osage Nation. Jumping to his feet, as Ernest takes the stand, Fraser gives a zesty, “This man is my client!” a line and delivery that many felt strayed from the film’s tone.
Martin Scorsese Defends Fraser’s Acting
In defense of Brendan Fraser, Martin Scorsese said that he still believes the actor was the perfect fit for the role, adding that he’s “admired his work over the years.”
Of Fraser’s time on set, Scorsese adds that he and the rest of the team behind Killers of the Flower Moon “had a really good time” working with the star and that Fraser paired particularly well with Leonardo DiCaprio, almost stealing the spotlight from him during scenes. “He’s a wonderful actor and he was just great to work with,” Scorsese reiterated at the end of his comments.
Brendan Fraser’s Hollywood Comeback Came In 2022 With The Whale
Known for his roles in films including George of the Jungle, Bedazzled, and The Mummy franchise, Brendan Fraser’s career in Hollywood petered out over the years, with the fan-favorite actor retreating to a quiet life. It was through A24 and Darren Aronofsky’s 2022 drama, The Whale that Fraser made his return to the industry.
With the support of his ardent following and devoted friends in the business, the movie marked a comeback for the actor which would result in him earning the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Up Next For Brendan Fraser
Killers of the Flower Moon serves as Brendan Fraser’s first project following his big win at the Oscars, marking a first in his career for working alongside legendary director, Martin Scorsese. Next, audiences will be able to catch the star in Max Barbakow’s comedy, Brothers, where Fraser will star alongside Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage.
Fraser Stars Alongside Robert De Niro And Leonardo DiCaprio In Killers Of The Flower Moon
As for Killers of the Flower Moon, along with Brendan Fraser, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert de Niro, the film also features knock-out performances from Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and Tantoo Cardinal.
Set in Oklahoma during the 1920s, the film tells the true story of a handful of murders in the Osage Nation carried out by white men following the discovery of oil on the tribal land. The star-stacked story of greed and murder is the latest film to come from Martin Scorsese, the man behind such classics as Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Irishman. The movie is now out in theaters.
