Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may have made headlines recently for a dark chapter in their romantic relationship, but fans of the couple and their happier beginnings are heading to Netflix to catch them in the flick that was rumored to have started it all – Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The film recently landed on the streaming platform and since then has quickly risen to the top spot as the #3 most viewed movie in the U.S. Packed with action and an intriguing love story, there’s much to like from the 2005 film.
The feature centers around the lives of John (Brad Pitt) and Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie), a married couple finding themselves trapped in their boring marriage. Unbeknownst to their other half, they’re both working as highly trained assassins and have been given the task of taking out the same target, Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody). As their secret lives become not so secret, the two find themselves at odds as they soon become the target of the other’s hit – which proves to really spice things up.
The Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-led feature would receive a mixture of reviews from critics, currently sitting with a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Raking in well over $478 million, the feature would, at the time, mark the highest-grossing film for both Jolie and Pitt’s careers. It would also mark the beginning of the romantic relationship between its stars, leading Pitt to file for divorce from Jennifer Anniston – a scandal that truly rocked America.
Like a matter of fate, the casting of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie almost didn’t happen. Pitt was first set to star alongside Nicole Kidman before both actors dropped out. Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Cate Blanchett were all considered for the leading roles, but when Gwyneth Paltrow signed on, Brad Pitt came back on board. Of course, Paltrow would eventually jump ship, leaving the spot open for Angelina Jolie.
Since then, it’s been a rocky road for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie with the couple’s loving romance hitting several speed bumps in the 2010s. Jolie filed a troubling claim against her then-husband back in 2016, the details of which have just been made public. The allegations state that during a flight, Pitt verbally and physically assaulted Jolie and several of their children.
Eventually, the couple would sign the divorce papers in 2019. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s hearing was behind closed doors with much of the details kept out of the public eye. Pitt was granted 50-50 custody rights to the couple’s children.
Like many big Hollywood productions of yesteryear, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. will soon be receiving a reboot. Stepping into the roles once played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (Pen15). As of right now, the title does not have a release window.
With the streaming success of Mr & Mrs. Smith, it’s clear that fans want to step back in time and see the early days of the ex-couple. While Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s romance may have fizzled out, we’ll always have the exciting early days via the action feature.
