Borderlands Movie Finally Releases Full Look After Troubled Production
Good news Borderlands fans, Eli Roth’s film adaptation of the beloved looter shooter finally has an official teaser after years of troubled productions. The teaser gives minimal information but promises a trailer coming soon which will give fans a better look at the adaptation. Even so, after many years of rumors and false starts, it’s reassuring to have official marketing coming out before the movie releases this summer.
Captures The Spirit Of The Game
For those unfamiliar with the Borderland franchise, it’s a madcap sci-fi looter shooter that follows vault hunters in a dystopian galactic setting on the planet of Pandora. The villains of the franchise often control corporations, which in turn wield great political power to oppress and control the Borderlands universe. It’s a setting that brings in elements from all across sci-fi from Dune to Mad Max all with a hefty amount of lighthearted humor.
Cate Blanchett Stars As Lilith
The cast of characters and what little information we have about the plot seem to indicate that Roth’s film will follow a rough approximation of the first Borderlands game. However, Roth has stated that the movie isn’t canonical with the story of the games and they’ll be pulling elements from all across the series as they see fit. So even if your love for Boardlernads comes later in the series you should expect to see hints of the things you love from all across the franchise.
All-Star Cast
The movie promises to bring an all-star cast to the adaptation, offering a slue of great actors for those who aren’t convinced to see the movie based on its connection to the Borderlands games alone. The main cast has names like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jamie Lee Curtis bringing characters Lilith, Roland, Tiny Tina, and Dr. Tannis to life. Jack Black is also involved, offering his vocal talents to voice the beloved obnoxious robot Claptrap.
Familiar Faces Throughout The Film
Even Borderlands’ secondary cast has some impressive names on board. Beloved comedian and actor Bobby Lee, known for his time on Mad TV, as well as movies like Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle will have a smaller role in the movie as Larry. Character actress Janina Gavankar of True Blood fame will also make an appearance as Knoxx.
Directed By Eli Roth
The film is being directed by Eli Roth, a director known for grizzly horror movies which is an interesting but not entirely disheartening choice to be the visionary behind Borderlands. He’s probably best known as a director for his run of great, brutal, horror movies like the Hostile franchise and Cabin Fever. While Borderlands is not a horror franchise, by any stretch of the imagination, it is set in a dark, violent world where over-the-top murders are commonplace making a horror director an incredibly apt choice.
Arrives This Summer
Borderlands is being released by Lionsgate Films and will be in US theaters on August 9, 2024, after being announced way back in 2015. For fans of the game franchise, it will be an opportunity to see a beloved franchise adapted to the big screen. For the rest of the movie-going audience, Borderlands will offer a phenomenal cast bringing a fun, vibrant world to life.
