If you’re looking for an underrated A24 horror flick, you better move fast before Bodies Bodies Bodies rounds out its time on Netflix on September 19. A mixture of satire, slasher, and silly, the film is the perfect choice for your next movie night – even for your friend who isn’t really into horror.

The Story

Starring Maria Bakalova, who had audiences rolling with laughter from her appearance in Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, Bodies Bodies Bodies centers around a woman named Bee (Bakalova) who goes away with her new girlfriend, Sophie (Amandla Stenberg), to meet her friends.

Upon the couple’s arrival, Bee is met by Sophie’s outgoing and over-the-top group of pals who all seem to have plenty of secrets between them from years of friendship. As a hurricane begins to rage outside, the party kicks off and ushers in a day of drinking and drugs that soon rolls into the night.

Once the sun goes down, the next part of the event starts, with one of the members of the friend circle suggesting that they play the eponymous whodunnit game. But, when one of the attendees ends up dead, the rest of the group panics, and things quickly spiral out of control as they try to find the murderer in their midst.

The Cast

Along with Maria Bakalova and Amandla Stenberg, the latter of whom recently gained further recognition thanks to the Disney+ and Star Wars series, The Acolyte, Bodies Bodies Bodies also features performances from Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live), Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby), Myha’la Herrold (Leave the World Behind), and more.

The project, which can easily be seen to serve as a satirical reflection of Gen Z, was under the direction of Halina Reijn.

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is a Certified Fresh production, earning an impressive 86 percent rating from critics. From the performances of its leading cast to the writing done by screenplay scribe Sarah DeLappe and story writer Kristen Roupenian, critics were generally all in agreement that the title was a standout feature.

Up against other movies like the multiverse-hopping Michelle Yeoh-led award-winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Bodies Bodies Bodies held its own during its limited theatrical run, earning $14 million at the box office.

A24

A24 is a wonderful and collaborative studio to have on your side, and that’s something that Reijn quickly learned after the success of Bodies Bodies Bodies. The director’s pairing with the studio went so that she recently re-teamed with them for the upcoming erotic thriller, Babygirl. Starring Nicole Kidman, Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, and more, audiences can expect to see the feature in cinemas this December.
