Now that Better Call Saul has wrapped up officially, Bob Odenkirk is setting his eyes on a much different genre. The man was part of a film that showcased some different talents of his, which fall squarely under the action film star banner. That film was Nobody, which saw Odenkirk take on the role of a man who has a violent past that he kept secret from his own family. It truly had the makings of John Wick and Falling Down. Well, now it appears that the actor is fully invested in the action genre. According to Odenkirk, “I still train multiple times a week, and if I get my way, you’re going to see me doing more action. I found the action sequences a great deal of fun and close to doing sketch comedy.”
Bob Odenkirk revealed his feelings about the action genre while being interviewed at the Venice Film Festival. He also spoke about how Jackie Chan was always able to blend humor within his action films, and that is something that Odenkirk wants to aim for in the future. He did make the connection about “old people losing their s***.” He stated that it is quite humorous and that is what he is aiming to portray in his upcoming films. Nobody holds an 84% “certified fresh” critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an even better 94% audience rating. Although it had a quieter $57 million box office pull, people still generally liked seeing Odenkirk in the action genre. That is something that he believes that he can work with.
The man has spent most of his career within the confines of comedy. He had a sketch show with fellow comedian, David Cross. That show was called Mr. Show with Bob and David. It originally ran on HBO from 1993 to 1998. A sequel series called W/ Bob and David was revived for Netflix for one season. He has written for Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, The Dana Carvey Show, and The Ben Stiller Show. The man knows how to create, and he clearly sees an opportunity to use his skills to reinvent his career in the action-comedy genre. Bob Odenkirk is a fantastic actor on top of being a great writer, so we are all for seeing him transition into a funny version of John Wick.
Bob Odenkirk does not have any huge projects on the horizon, which means he could be preparing to start filming Nobody 2. He revealed that he still trains at least three times a week, so he is certainly preparing for this new life in the action genre. We certainly welcome it. It would be even more fantastic if Hutch Mansell would ever meet John Wick in a crossover situation. We could certainly see that happening.
For now, everyone can catch up on Better Call Saul, which sees Bob Odenkirk take on the role of Jimmy McGill aka Saul Goodman one final time. The series finally bridged the gap between Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, bringing an end to that entire universe. Though creator Vince Gilligan has stated he might return to it, we are not going to see these characters for many years. That leaves Odenkirk the time to fully envelop himself in the action genre. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
