Bob Odenkirk Is Remaking The Worst Movie Ever Made And It’s Not A Joke
Bob Odenkirk is starring in a remake of Tommy Wiseau's legendary film, The Room, and it's being played completely straight.
Bob Odenkirk is apparently remaking the hit so-bad-it’s-good film, The Room. The Better Call Saul star is set to take the lead in the film, previously held by auteur filmmaker Tommy Wiseau. This scoop comes from indie filmmaker Justin Decloux, who shared the information via Twitter.
Many fans, obviously, assumed that the post was a joke, especially considering Bob Odenkirk’s background in sketch comedy, but Decloux clarified that The Room remake was indeed happening for real. Odenkirk famously co-created the hit HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show With Bob and David, alongside veteran comedian David Cross. Odenkirk also flexed his comedic acting skills in a recent appearance on I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, a Netflix original sketch show.
Justin Decloux made sure to specify that the film, shot mostly on a green screen, would be played seriously by Bob Odenkirk, despite the absurd writing and blocking of the original The Room. The original film premiered in 2003, rapidly garnering cult status for its bizarre tone and acting choices from Tommy Wiseau. A James Franco-led film, The Disaster Artist, served as a deep dive into the behind-the-scenes story of how the film was made, and hit theaters in 2017.
In the 2003 original, Tommy Wiseau stars as Johnny, a kind San Francisco banker who lives in a townhouse with his soon-to-be wife, Lisa. As the film progresses, we see Johnny get taken advantage of time and time again, most egregiously, when Lisa cheats on him with his best friend, Mark. Bob Odenkirk will have to pull off an incredible dramatic performance in order to play a straight-laced version of The Room, as the film concludes with Johnny screaming, “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa” and taking his own life.
Bob Odenkirk’s IMDb page doesn’t seem to have information regarding the newly announced remake of The Room, but it does reveal the series of dramatic acting roles he’s taken in the past decade. According to Odenkirk’s memoir, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama, the Nobody star felt as though dramatic acting was out of the question before taking on the highly in-depth role of Saul Goodman, the criminal lawyer for Walter White in the hit AMC series Breaking Bad. Since the character’s final on-screen appearance aired in the finale of Better Call Saul’s spin-off show, Odenkirk has been preparing to release his latest leading role in the AMC series Lucky Hank, which is set to premiere on March 19.
The Twitter thread also confirmed the involvement of The Haunting of Hill House filmmaking duo Mike Flanagan and Kate Seigel, though it doesn’t specify in what capacity their work will be employed in the film. With this many heavy hitters on board, the internet will surely be buzzing about Bob Odenkirk’s harrowing performance in The Room for years to come. Of course, no matter how skilled the talented actor is, it’s unlikely that the film will be able to top the original’s pure camp and unrestrained madness.
