NBC’s popular crime-thriller series, The Blacklist, which is currently in its eighth season was recently renewed for the ninth season. Fans were hoping to see more of the ongoing animosity between lead characters Elizabeth Liz, played by Megan Boone, and James Spader’s Raymond “Red” Reddington. But it has been recently reported that Season 8 will mark the end of Boone’s character’s journey as the actress will be exiting the series.

Megan Boone, who became a renowned star thanks to the series, has led The Blacklist for eight seasons alongside Emmy-winner James Spader, But recently Deadline has reported that she will be leaving the long-running NBC series. Season 8’s finale episode will be her last as a series regular. From hunting those on the FBI’s Blacklist, Boone’s character Liz has now become the hunted and now occupies the no. 1 position in the list.

Last we saw Liz on The Blacklist, she was discovering the truth behind all the lies told to her in the past eight years. She was taken to the center of Red’s operations, discovers why the imposter Raymond Reddington was created in the first place, and what really happened to her mother, Katrina. But before she could learn the whole truth, she was badly wounded by Townsend and his men. She was saved in time by Reddington who activated a self-destruct device to kill Townsend after apologizing for the role he played in his family’s demise.

What happens next in The Blacklist remains to be seen. Who Reddington really is, where is the real Katrina, and whether Reddington will be able to help Liz allowing her to make it out of the bunker alive are questions that will be answered in Season 8’s morbidly named finale, “Konets” which means “the end” in Russian. Whether it hints at the end of Liz or the culmination of all the problems in her life till this point is something only the finale will tell.

Perhaps the only silver-lining the news of Boone’s departure carries is the fact that her exit was not something that was hastily planned. As per Deadline, plans for Boone’s exit from The Blacklist were made early on, such that it allowed a well-crafted arc for her character Elizabeth Keen in Season 8. Her departure doesn’t look like something that has been haphazardly put together. Reportedly, the decision of ending Liz’s arc on the show was something that Boone and the creators of the series took together so no drama there. Boone was one of the original cast members, along with Spader, Diego Klattenhoff as Donald Ressler, and Harry Lennix as Harold Cooper who have been on the show since Season 1.

Renowned series, that have enjoyed decade-long runs, have been known to perish when someone from its lead cast makes the decision to bow out. But NBC’s thriller tv series, The Blacklist, has maintained its strong viewership numbers and has remained a favorite of critics for eight seasons despite the departure of many from its original cast like Ryan Eggold, Parminder Nagra, and Mozhan Marnò. But it remains to be seen whether it will continue achieving the same success after losing one of its leading stars.
