Netflix Orders Black Mirror Season 7, Returning To Its Best Episode
The news of more Black Mirror all by itself is already enough to get plenty of people excited. But combine that with the news that the series will be revisiting one of the most popular episodes the show has had in its six seasons aired so far, and you have a recipe for season seven of Black Mirror to be one that fans have very high expectations for.
That is because there has been confirmation that the series will be revisiting the setting of “USS Callister”, the show’s Star Trek-inspired story.
Return To The USS Callister
Netflix just announced the new season of Black Mirror and knew that pairing it alongside a return of a fan-favorite episode would make a splash.
The last time we saw the crew of the USS Callister was all the way back in episode one of season four in 2017. But the story was rife for further exploration. So a revisit is most welcome by fans of the show.
Problems Just Beginning?
The Black Mirror news came at Netflix’s See What’s Next Event in London. There, a tease said, “USS Callister will return… Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.”
Unfortunately, that little snippet is all fans have to tide them over for the time being. But even such a small nugget of information definitely will not stop speculation about which direction the episode might head.
Critics Loved It
It was not just fans who loved the “USS Callister” episode of Black Mirror either. Critics were equally as enthusiastic and gave the episode a variety of awards.
This includes award wins from ceremonies like the Primetime Emmy Awards, which gave the episode the awards of Outstanding Television Movie, Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special, and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series or Movie. Quite the list.
More And More Awards
It also includes nominations for the Black Mirror episode from the BAFTA Television Craft Awards in categories like production design, and from the Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. The MTV Movie & TV Awards, the RTS Television Awards, and the Golden Reel Awards all also acknowledged the episode with nominations as well.
A Scary Premise
The Black Mirror episode follows the story of disgruntled employee Robert Daly who works at a company that makes a multiplayer game called Infinity.
To get revenge against coworkers who he feels have wronged him, Daly amuses himself by uploading digital counterparts of them into Infinity for him to torment.
But the digital people have enough advanced awareness to feel vengeful in their own right and concoct a plan to escape the misery Daly subjects them to. It quickly became one of Black Mirror’s most loved episodes.
Black Mirror On Netflix
The episode was praised as a clever commentary on the meaning of sentience, as well as harmful gendered behaviors. Of course, many also enjoyed all the fun and abundant Star Trek allusions, but those were a vehicle for the deeper discussions that Black Mirror is so often lauded for.
It will certainly be interesting to see what themes are explored in the sequel to the classic episode, and if it can live up to the high expectations that its predecessor has established.
