Bette Midler Wants To Join The Best Show On Television
Bette Midler would love to be cast in the upcoming third season of The White Lotus.
Bette Midler has been an icon in the film, television, and music industries for decades. As such, it would stand to reason that she could get any role she wants: and she wants to be on The White Lotus. “Mike White pokes fun at the worst kind of people,” she says, as quoted by Variety, “the truly entitled and rich people behaving badly. Everybody likes to see them get their comeuppance. I really enjoy that.”
While Bette Midler doesn’t actually have the role in hand, she has expressed a lot of enthusiasm for it. She told Variety that she would join the show “in a New York minute” if asked, and goes on to describe how much she enjoys the dynamic between the “haves and the have-nots” in The White Lotus, which, she says, is an “eternal” struggle.
While she herself, being such a rich and famous singer and actress and all, would theoretically have a bit of sympathy for the poor, downtrodden wealthy characters, Bette Midler actually loves seeing people get their comeuppance for assuming they are better than others just because they have money or clout.
HBO hasn’t made any comment on whether they would consider casting Bette Midler for the now-greenlit season three of the show, but she does have an impressive comedy resume that should put her at the top of the list for the casting department. Her roles in the original Hocus Pocus and the 2022 sequel show that she can be silly and play a character that sees herself as much more important than everyone else, which is exactly the kind of character The White Lotus is looking for. She has also appeared in other comedies and dramedies, such as The Politician and Bette, in which she poked fun at her own status as a celebrity.
Plus, The White Lotus has plenty of openings for new cast members to join, as every season introduces a whole new set of characters in a whole new location. So far, the show has featured White Lotus hotel locations in Hawaii and Sicily, with next season rumored to take place somewhere in Asia.
Perhaps Bette Midler could play a character similar to (or perhaps even related to) Jennifer Coolidge’s fan-favorite character Tanya McQuoid who (spoiler alert) tragically died in season two. Bette Midler could be just the kind of quirky character and big personality that audiences need to fill that void moving forward.
Bette Midler also already has a wide and very diverse group of fans that would likely follow her move to The White Lotus, which could only mean even more viewers for HBO’s already hot series.
It is unclear, though, if the show may change the tone slightly in the next season, as rumor has it that it may revolve around a different concept than the previous two seasons. While it would still likely be a dark comedy, some sources say that it may include an exploration of spirituality.
We don’t know how all of this would fit together, but Bette Midler is game to get on board either way. And with her comedy chops and the enthusiasm she would be bringing to the role, it seems like it would be a win-win for everyone involved.
