The best sword fights in movie history aren’t just entertaining action sequences, they’re the scenes that either progress or resolve an epic story while keeping the audience emotionally engaged and on the edge of their seats throughout the entire scene. Hollywood has produced a ton of awesome action scenes filled with state-of-the-art special effects and brought to the screen by a talented team of people including, but not limited to, the writers, directors, choreographers, actors, and editors, but the following blockbusters are the best of the best, at least when it comes to masterful sword fighting.

10. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

The nearly five-minute-long action sequence in The Matrix Reloaded starring Keanu Reeves as Neo was choreographed by a genius fight choreographer named Yuen Woo-ping, who actually has several scenes show up on this list of the best cinematic sword fights (see Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

This particular fight in the 2003 action blockbuster features a jaw-dropping display of special effects and choreography as Neo creatively finds new ways to combat each clone as he is ambushed. The scene has gone down in movie history as one of the best choreographed and visually appealing sword fights that uses more than just Neo’s fencing skills but also combines a variety of martial arts.

9. Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)

Also choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, the sword fight between The Bride (Uma Thurman) and O-Ren (Lucy Liu) in Kill Bill: Volume 1 is more than just a physical battle—it’s also a clash of personalities and motivations. The brutal fight reveals more about both characters as we learn about O-Ren’s backstory and motivations as a Yakuza boss and see The Bride’s unwavering determination to complete her revenge. Additionally, the fight takes place in a serene, snowy garden, a stark and beautiful backdrop that contrasts the intense battle where the white snow stained with the red blood of the combatants adds to the visual impact of the scene.

8. Gladiator (2000)

The final fight in Gladitor is the culmination of Russell Crowe Maximus’ journey for revenge and justice. The audience has been invested in Maximus’ character for nearly two and a half hours, and this sword fight will determine the fate of the entire Roman Empire.

The stakes are high, and the fight is more than just entertainment—it’s symbolic. This is a fight between good and evil, with Maximus representing the forces of good, fighting for justice and freedom, while Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus represents the forces of evil, seeking power and control. Additionally, the fight is fast-paced, intense, and full of tension, making it a thrilling spectacle to watch and one of the best sword fights to come out of Hollywood.

7. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is another example of Yuen Woo-ping’s masterful skill at creating entertaining and authentic fight scenes in movies. The rooftop fight between Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi) is a breathtaking display of wire-fu choreography and one of the best sword fights in movie history, thanks to him.

This scene is much more than an action sequence containing a sword fight but is also a masterclass in great action cinematography as it uses a combination of excellent choreography, emotional storytelling that captures an important moment in the story, immersive and cinematic music, and innovation (utilizing wires to make the actors fly through the air in visually gripping special effects) to make one of the greatest sword fights in cinema history.

6. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Say what you will about the prequel series (we know they aren’t as good as the original Star Wars), but you cannot deny that the duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar at the end of Revenge of the Sith didn’t break your heart just a little (unless you don’t have a heart to break). “You were my brother, Anakin!” Obi-Wan says to a limbless Anakin after he wins the sword (well, lightsaber) fight, “I loved you.” Not only is it a climactic moment in the movie and for both Obi-Wan and Anakin’s characters, but it is a pivotal moment in the entire franchise as this moment marks Anakin’s complete subservience to the dark side.

In addition to being a highly emotional scene that is integral to the plot of the entire series and the development of the characters, the fight is an impressive display of expert lightsaber combat set against a stunningly beautiful black and red backdrop of the volcanic planet, with excellent sound design to create an immersive experience for the audience.

5. Braveheart (1995)

sword fights

The Battle of Stirling is a pivotal moment in Braveheart, representing the first major victory for William Wallace and his Scottish rebels, which makes the fight have emotional resonance beyond just the physical action. This means that the sword fighting that occurs during the battle is more than just an entertaining action sequence, like something you’d find in a Michael Bay movie that does nothing for the story. It’s powerful and memorable because it’s important.

The scene depicts a realistic and brutal portrayal of medieval warfare, with both sides using swords, spears, and other weapons. The fighting is messy and chaotic, with no clear advantage for either side, which adds to the tension and suspense. Additionally, music composed by James Horner adds to the emotional impact of the scene with an emphatic and stirring score that heightens the tension and drama.

4. Highlander (1986)

While the idea of an immortal Scottish swordsman may not be historically accurate, the choreography in the final sword fight between Connor MacLeod and the Kurgan is completely brutal and historically accurate. The swords used in the movie were actual replicas of authentic 16th-century Scottish swords and legendary sword master Bob Anderson designed the fight choreography.

The fight is the climax of the film’s story, representing the ultimate showdown between the protagonist, Connor MacLeod, and his arch-nemesis, the Kurgan. The accuracy combined with the epic final climactic sequence of the story is what makes this one of the best cinematic sword fights.

3. The Last Samurai (2003)

sword fights

The Last Samurai is much more than an entertaining action flick, it’s based on the true events of the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, and the sword fighting techniques depicted in this scene are accurate to the period. The choreography was designed by Japanese sword master Tetsuro Shimaguchi who ensured that the movements and techniques shown on film were authentic, which is one reason why the final fight is one of the greatest sword fights in cinematic history.

The fight is the climax of the film’s story, representing the ultimate clash between Katsumoto’s traditional samurai values and the modernization of Japan. The audience is invested in both characters and their respective causes, making the fight even more emotionally charged and impactful for the audience. Movie watchers hang on the edge of their seats as the movie comes towards the culmination of the character arcs of both Katsumoto and the film’s protagonist, Captain Nathan Algren.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

sword fights

The duel between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was not only iconic because of the flashy choreography that utilized every square foot of the set’s space as the pair sidestepped across the blacksmith’s floor and balanced high up in the rafters, but it was also a key introduction to both of their characters. Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow’s fighting style is wild and unpredictable, much like his personality, whereas Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner is disciplined and strategic as he has practiced the art of sword fighting every day in hopes of one day getting revenge for his father. Additionally, the scene is not just an action sequence, but it moves the story along, gives the audience exposition in an interesting way, adds humor to the story, and is shot from interesting angles, all of which makes this scene one of the best sword fights in cinematic history.

1. The Princess Bride (1987)

sword fights

The sword fight between Inigo Montoya and the Man in Black is one of the best sword-fighting scenes ever seen on film. Not only is the moment an important part of the story as it gives the backstory to Inigo and thus convinces the audience to root for him and also showcases how skillful the Man in Black is as he bests Inigo in the first of the three trials he faces to get to Buttercup, but it’s also just plain entertaining. The scene is emotionally charged, excellently choreographed, and filled with witty banter that the audience has to pay close attention to in order to keep up.

Overall, the scene is a masterclass in action storytelling, combining expert choreography, engaging storytelling, emotional depth, and a touch of humor to create a truly memorable movie moment.
