The Best Steven Spielberg Movie Is About To Leave Streaming
Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park franchise is leaving HBO Max on January 31st.
The original Jurassic Park trilogy will be removed from HBO Max’s vast streaming catalog on January 31st, 2023. Steven Spielberg’s storied career has spanned dozens upon dozens of critically acclaimed blockbusters near and dear to our hearts, with Jurassic Park being chief among them. The movie recently won a Rotten Tomatoes user poll, being crowned the ‘ultimate’ Spielberg film, narrowly beating out competitors such as Jaws, E.T., and Temple of Doom. So if you were looking for an excuse to get 2023 off to a good start, consider taking your friends and family on one last wild ride through the dino safari before it’s too late!
This move comes as part of the ongoing merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc. and is the latest of nearly 100 titles to be pulled from the streaming giant in anticipation of HBO Max shutting down entirely to merge with Discovery+, forming a new service which is set to arrive in the late spring of 2023. The Steven Spielberg-led Jurassic Park trilogy is the most recent casualty of the business splicing, following hit shows such as Infinity Train, Westworld, and Minx all being canceled or removed in a systemic effort for the streamer to cut cost and declutter since last summer. With so many movies and shows becoming homeless amidst the collateral of this corporate merger, it remains unconfirmed where the Jurassic Park series will wind up next.
As an NBCUniversal property, it seems likely that the new streaming home for the films will be Peacock. Steven Spielberg directed the first two films in the Jurassic Park series, before stepping back into the role as a producer for the third and taking a hands-off approach to produce the Colin Trevorrow sequel trilogy years later. Jurassic World Dominion is the most recent in the franchise and saw the return of the original cast: Sam Neil, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, alongside the newfound series’ leading actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
Jurassic World Dominion can be found streaming on Peacock, adding to the likelihood of the original trilogy moving there as well.
Steven Spielberg’s accolades of course extend far outside of the Jurassic Park franchise, as the director has been named one of the most prolific and influential filmmakers of the last several decades. He has over 160 credited works as a producer, and more than 60 IMDb credits as a director since his debut short film, The Last Gun, which premiered in 1959. The Schindler’s List filmmaker currently has more than a dozen upcoming projects in various stages of production, including Gremlins 3, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Steven Spielberg’s entries into the world of Hollywood blockbusters have been long and storied, but most fans agree that there’s something truly special about the first Jurassic Park film. The movie’s intense focus on accurate dinosaur details pushed science as we know it to progress in paleontology, inspiring a generation of youths to study fossils and seek further anthropological education. The movie’s use of practical effects and animatronics made the film a visual spectacle that continues to shock and awe audiences to this day.
