The Best Sketch Comedy Show Of All Time Still Holds Up On Hulu

By TeeJay Small | Updated

If you’ve spent any time on the internet at all, you’ve no-doubt stumbled across a few positively hilarious sketches from the hit Comedy Central series Key & Peele. Even if you haven’t actually seen the sketches, you’ve definitely been exposed to some of the jokes through cultural osmosis, especially if you’re one of the poor souls who happens to be named Aaron. Today, the entire series is available to stream on Hulu, with just about every sketch aging like fine wine.

Key & Peele first premiered on Comedy Central back in 2012, before ultimately running for five hilarious seasons. The show is hosted by the titular comedy duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who previously exhibited their tremendous comedic chemistry on the Fox sketch comedy series Mad TV. Over the course of the show’s brief run, it amassed dozens of Emmys, a Writers Guild Award, an NAACP Image Award, and even a Peabody.

Like other sketch comedy shows, Key & Peele centers on the duo as they appear in a wide array of pre-taped skits, often alongside other prominent comedians. While most sketch comedy programs tend to come and go with little impact, Key & Peele offers a number of incredibly memorable outings that routinely still make the rounds today.

Maybe the eponymous performers just have that X factor, maybe their writing is just superior to that of their contemporaries, or maybe it’s Keegan-Michael Key’s ability to perform hilarious flying kicks, but this show only gets more iconic with time.

So Many Iconic Bits To Choose From

If you ask around, just about everyone has a different opinion on what the best Key & Peele sketch is. Some people love the no-nonsense substitute teacher Mr. Garvey, who can’t seem to pronounce any of his students’ names right when taking roll call, while others prefer Wendell, the perpetually embarrassed overweight dork who lies to the pizza man about having a thriving social life.

If you ask me, it’s hard to top Obama’s anger translator, Luther, who offers the hard truths that the former United States president wishes he could deliver without courting major controversy.

One of the most iconic moments in the run of the show was when former President Obama fully embraced the Key & Peele sketch, and brought Keegan-Michael Key on stage at the 2015 White House Correspondents Dinner to perform as Luther. While the outing obviously can’t be viewed in an actual episode of Key & Peele, it stands as a testament to the cultural impact that the show held. On an unrelated note, it also served as a testament to just how hilarious former President Obama was, especially in comparison to some of his elderly successors.

The Duo Has Since Branched Out

While the actual content of Key & Peele has only continued to get better and better with time, so too have the performers who created the show. Jordan Peele has gone on to become the godfather of modern horror filmmaking, delivering such incredible movies as Get Out and Nope. Meanwhile, Keegan-Michael Key has been flexing his acting muscles since the sketch comedy series concluded, appearing in projects such as Wonka, The Super Mario Bros Movie, The Lion King, and The Predator.

When Key & Peele was airing new episodes, it was easy to take the duo for granted and see them as your standard run-of-the-mill comedians. But now, looking back, it’s easy to see just how talented Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele really are, as they continually embody the goofy characters, create convincing sketch backstories, and present atmospheric vibes that instantly transport you into the narrative of the sketch.

If you’re interested in catching full episodes of Key & Peele, instead of spending 400 hours binge-watching the individual sketches on YouTube, the series can be streamed on Hulu today.
