The Best Music Biopic Ever Needs A Sequel Before It’s Too Late
Back in 2015, audiences were treated to Straight Outta Compton, a music biopic that centered on one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, N.W.A. Though the film received rave reviews, offered excellent performances, and has gone on to set an incredibly high watermark for other music biopics of this nature, the film has yet to deliver a sequel. A Straight Outta Compton sequel would undoubtedly be a massive hit and should absolutely be made soon, while N.W.A. alumni like Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are still in peak form.
Straight Outta Compton Has More To Cover
Dr. Dre and Ice Cube served as producers on the original film, which told the controversial and political tale of their early days pioneering the sound and musical style of gangsta rap. The film primarily centered on the rise and fall of N.W.A., culminating in the death of founding member Eazy-E in 1995 and Dre’s departure from Death Row Records to launch his own label in 1996.
Don’t Forget About Dre
While Straight Outta Compton offered a wide scope of fascinating stories about the rap icons, Dre and Cube have since gone on to become living legends in the rap industry, meaning there are now three decades worth of material to base a sequel on.
For starters, a Straight Outta Compton sequel could center on Dr. Dre’s controversial decision to sign Eminem in 1998 and follow the producer’s massive success mentoring subsequent artists like 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson Paak.
Ice Cube Joined The A-List
On Ice Cube’s end, the film could follow his decision to dive head-first into feature films and become an A-list movie star, leading the cast of such projects as Are We There Yet, xXx: State of the Union, 21 Jump Street, and Ride Along, with Kevin Hart. Throughout the years, the pair has also gone on to release chart-topping albums and provide special guest appearances on younger artists’ ventures.
Recent Reunions
While other N.W.A. members such as MC Ren and DJ Yella arguably peaked during their time within the group, they surely have other stories to tell as well, as evidenced by their willingness to provide some behind-the-scenes pointers to the original Straight Outta Compton cast and crew.
Various N.W.A. members have reunited or stepped out for massive events in the years since Eazy-E’s untimely passing, including Dr. Dre’s landmark Super Bowl LVI performance alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige. A Straight Outta Compton sequel could even utilize real footage of the performance for its thrilling climax.
It Was A Good Day
The original Straight Outta Compton film was directed by The Fate of the Furious filmmaker F. Gary Gray. Gray previously worked with Ice Cube on the 1995 film Friday, as well as a wide array of music videos throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. If a Straight Outta Compton sequel does come to pass, Gray should absolutely return in the director’s chair, or at least provide insight as a producer of some kind.
Catch Straight Outta Compton On Max
Straight Outta Compton stars Paul Giamatti, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr., and Ice Cube‘s real-life son O’Shea Jackson Jr. If you’re interested in catching the modern classic, it can be streamed right now on Max. Unfortunately, no Straight Outta Compton sequel has been announced at this time, though hip-hop fans from around the world would certainly welcome such a film with open arms.
