The Best MCU Pairing Will Never Happen

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

A large part of why people love the Marvel Cinematic Universe is because it’s like an overflowing toy box of cool characters that get to fight alongside each other. This helps lead to some unexpected pairings, like how well Falcon and The Winter Soldier bounced off each other or Iron Man’s surprisingly touching scenes together with Nebula. However, the best potential MCU pairing will never happen: Deadpool and She-Hulk are both funny fourth-wall breakers who would be hilarious together, but the combination of her show being controversial and Disney’s hesitation to bring TV characters to the big screen will keep this from happening.

Let’s Not Take Things So Seriously

Deadpool

The first reason that Deadpool and She-Hulk would be a great team-up is that they are the MCU’s funniest characters. Many times, they seem like the only characters to have gotten the memo that silly movies based on sillier comics don’t need to be taken so seriously. It’s fine to laugh at this weird little cinematic universe, and Deadpool and She-Hulk are most emphatically in on the joke.

Both Characters Smash Through The Fourth Wall

She-Hulk

The second reason I’d love to see Deadpool and She-Hulk onscreen together is that these are the only two MCU characters who realize they are fictional characters inside a cinematic universe. Deadpool, as the “Merc With a Mouth,” frequently makes joking references to the actors and events of these Marvel movies that only audiences would know or understand. As for She-Hulk, she broke the wall in the most definitive way, graduating from simply speaking to the audience to forcibly changing up her season 1 finale climax because she was dissatisfied with the original ending.

Controversy Getting In The Way Of This Crossover

She-Hulk

Two funny, fourth-wall-breaking characters would be dynamite onscreen together, so why don’t I think Deadpool and She-Hulk will ever team up in the MCU? Part of the reason is all of the weird controversy surrounding the She-Hulk Disney+ show.

While I personally loved that series, fans endlessly complained about the effects, the comedy (She-Hulk dancing with Megan Thee Stallion now lives in internet infamy), and the finale. Given how Marvel has been dealing with superhero fatigue and dwindling box office returns, it’s doubtful they would ever pair a character as immensely popular as Deadpool with a less popular and very controversial figure like She-Hulk.

From One Screen To Another

Deadpool & Wolverine

The final thing making an onscreen Deadpool/She-Hulk team-up unlikely is that Marvel has historically been very hesitant about bringing TV show characters to the big screen. Given the insane success of Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s very likely the House of Mouse will keep our Merc With a Mouth headlining movies instead of spinoff TV shows. That means that if She-Hulk were to team up with him, she’d have to join him on the big screen.

Like Oil And Water

She-Hulk

However, this would fly in the face of nervousness about TV characters making the jump into film, nervousness which explains why even successful mainstream shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. never had any character cameos in an Avengers movie. In fact, that’s why it was such a big deal to see Charlie Cox (who shot to fame as Daredevil on the small screen) make an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given all this info, you don’t have to be Doctor Strange to predict it’s highly unlikely that the MCU’s most controversial TV character will team up with its most successful film character.

Throwing Punches And Punchlines

That’s a shame because Deadpool and She-Hulk would be the ultimate onscreen pair, both in terms of throwing punches and throwing punchlines. Of course, we should never say never; not that long ago the prospect of seeing Wolverine back on the big screen seemed downright impossible. If the impossible happens again and these charismatic characters do link up, we’re left with one big question: will we need to come up with a fifth wall to break?
