The Best Director You Don’t Know Is Making A New Matrix Movie
The Matrix trilogy has never been able to quite capture the stratospheric heights of the original film in 1999, but maybe that will change under the direction of Drew Goddard. Goddard, best known for his work on The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods, has been tapped to write and direct a new film in the franchise for Warner Bros. Lana Wachowski, co-director and co-writer for the original film, will be executive producing the project.
A New Era For The Matrix
This new Matrix project is in the early phases of development, so there is no news on casting and whether Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, or Hugo Weaving will reprise any of their roles. Drew Goddard is also producing the project with partner Sarah Esberg through their Goddard Textiles company. Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production, spoke about the new project saying, “Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
The Creator Of Netflix’s Daredevil
The Matrix franchise seems like a great fit for Drew Goddard, who was nominated for an adapted screenplay Oscar for his work on The Martian. He has also directed and written the films The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale, which have become modern cult classics in their own right. He has also written for many projects throughout his career, including Cloverfield and the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Lost, and the Netflix Daredevil series, which he also created.
Ground-Breaking Sci-Fi Franchise
The Matrix, co-directed and co-written by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, is one of the most influential films of all time and tells the story of Neo (Keanu Reeves), who is brought to a cyber underworld by a stranger known as Trinity (Carrie Anne-Moss) to meet the enigmatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). There, he discovers a rebellion of humans fighting against machines.
The Matrix would go on to spawn multiple sequels, an animated series, video games, and comics. The most recent film was 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, which was met with mixed reviews and a disappointing box office take. Perhaps Drew Goddard’s fresh approach to the franchise can help revitalize the franchise.
Goddard Has An Oscar
While we wait for his new Matrix film, Drew Goddard has several other projects lined up. Most of his upcoming projects are screenplays he’s writing, not the least of which is an adaptation of the Andy Weir novel Hail Mary. Goddard was attached to the project back in 2020, and it seems like a natural choice, considering he was nominated for an Oscar for adapting Weir’s The Martian.
The Wait Begins For Matrix 5
Drew Goddard is also working on a new ABC series, High Potential, which got a series order last year. The series stars It’s Always Sunny’s Kaitlin Olson as a single mom with an incredible mind who starts helping the police solve crimes. It is a remake of a French series that has been massively popular in France.
For now, we’ll have to wait to hear more news about this upcoming Matrix film. Hopefully, Drew Goddard’s film will get the beloved franchise back on track. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated.
