The Best Buddy Cop Television Duo Is Coming Back For Another Movie
A fourth Psych movie could be in the works quite soon.
You don’t have to be a psychic (even a fake one) to know that Psych was one of the best and most popular series ever broadcast on the USA Network. Between 2006 and 2014, the prolific show had eight seasons comprising 120 episodes, and the characters continued to appear in three different Psych movies afterward. Now, TV Line reports that we may have a fourth Psych movie on the horizon, as writer James Roday Rodriguez stated, “there’s nobody that doesn’t want it to happen” and that “there is a script,” meaning that when it comes to another film, “it’s just a matter of when, not if.”
The possibility of getting another Psych movie is very exciting for fans of this franchise and its colorful characters. If you’ve never tuned in, the general premise of the show was that Rodriguez played someone who combined his eidetic memory with keen observational skills to help the Santa Barbara Police Department solve crimes. Of course, his abilities make people think he is actually psychic, so he leans into the bit by creating his own psychic detective agency and playing up often-mundane clues that he discovers as flashes of psychic inspiration while working alongside his childhood friend Gus.
Previous Psych movie Psych 3: This is Gus was directed by Steve Franks, the creator of the show, and he wrote the script along with Rodriguez. This kind of creative collaboration is one of the reasons the franchise has endured so long and has such a legion of adoring fans. In a world full of soulless cash grabs using franchises that should have died long ago, we can’t help but love the Psych movies, which are made almost entirely because of the passion of everyone involved.
Unfortunately, passion alone isn’t always enough to make things happen right away, and Rodriguez was blunt about the fact that they have to deal with “semantics and scheduling” to get a fourth Pysch movie off the ground despite “the appetite” everyone has for the project. However, the star and writer also got a bit philosophical about whether a bit of time and distance from these characters might help audiences appreciate them that much more. He said that he liked the idea of making the movie “sooner rather than later…because you never want people to forget how much they love you” but also acknowledged that “a little bit of time is always good, too!”
While it’s exciting to think we are getting a fourth Psych movie, it’s even more exciting to know that this will most likely not be the end for the franchise. Previously, Steve Franks said that he had plans to make six of these movies, meaning that until the fourth film drops, we’re only halfway through. This means a lot more Psych in our future, though Franks has warned these might not be the exact same characters and stories that fans know so well.
The reason for this is simple: just like the audience who loves these characters, nobody is the same in 2023 as they were in 2006 when the show began. The third Psych movie already showed us a more grownup view of this universe and its inhabitants, and the fourth film will likely be more of the same. Fortunately, we don’t need a psychic detective agency to predict that this movie will still find the perfect blend of comedy and drama.
