If you are like some of us over here at Giant Freakin Robot, a little dose of adrenaline is a good thing. Rather than go for that triple shot of espresso, we turn to Netflix to get our boost through the best action movies they can provide. Netflix offers high-action yet playful flicks while also bringing on the shoot ’em-up, big-bang action yarns.

Some of the streamer’s best options are Netflix originals, but the choices we are going to list offer great diversity. So, here are the 10 best action movies on Netflix right now.

Extraction (2020)

The first of the best action movies on the streamer is one of their own, the Netflix original Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth as a mercenary for hire, Tyler Rake. Rake and his team are called upon to rescue the son, Ovi, of an incarcerated Indian drug lord.

When Rake gets to Ovi, Rake’s team is killed in a double cross. Only Rake survives with Ovi and the two find themselves on the run. Rake has a number of chances to save himself and leave Ovi, but Rake’s memories of his son convince him not to. Now the two just have to make it alive to the extraction point.

Sam Hargrave directed the film from a script by Joe Russo and the story by Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, and Ande Parks.

The Gray Man (2022)

The Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony) have teamed up once again to direct this action thriller The Gray Man, which stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. This film is a Netflix original and is the first of what is expected to be a franchise. Gosling is CIA agent Court Gentry or Sierra Six, a man who finds himself on the run after he discovers some damning secrets of corruption centered around his superior.

To silence him, Chris Evans’ sociopathic ex-CIA agent Lloyd Hansen is sent in to take out Gentry. The film also stars Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Mile 22 (2018)

Mile 22 is a 2018 action thriller directed by Peter Berg (who also has a small role in the film) and stars Mark Wahlberg as CIA Agent James Silva. He leads a group of elite CIA agents who are called upon to escort a rogue police officer 22 miles to an extraction point. This officer has surrendered to the US Embassy for safe passage out of the country and he will give information about cesium, a highly toxic substance before it can be weaponized and kill hundreds of thousands.

London Has Fallen (2016)

He did it once and he is being called on to do it again. The “he” we are talking about is Secret Service agent Mike Banning and what he is being asked to do one more time is to save the life of the U.S. President. Gerard Butler plays Banning for the second time (the first was in Olympus Has Fallen). The action movie tells the story of terrorists who plan to wipe out the entire G7 as they have gathered in London for the British Prime Minister’s funeral. Aaron Eckhart plays the President and Morgan Freeman once again plays Vice President Allan Trumbull.

Triple Frontier (2019)

Triple Frontier is an action-adventure movie starring Ben Affleck as Tom Davis, the leader of a former U.S. Army Delta Force team that reunites in order to plan a heist of a South American crime lord. The prize, if they can pull it off, is $75 million. What the team finds out in the remote jungle house is that the payoff is much larger than anticipated. Now they are trying to escape with $250 million. Joining Affleck in the adventure are Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund.

Bullet Train (2022)

Brad Pitt leads the cast of Bullet Train, an action movie that sees him playing an assassin who takes on a job after the initial assassin calls in sick. Pitt’s “Ladybug”, though, is not the only assassin on the train and while the assassin’s goals don’t appear to be the same thing, they all do eventually collide in an explosive climax.

The humor is sharp, the violence is gratuitous and over-the-top, but by far one of the best action movies produced in the past decade. Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael Shannon, and Sandra Bullock join Pitt in the fun.

Uncharted (2022)

Uncharted is an action-adventure movie based on the best-selling, highly-rated video game franchise of the same name. Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake, the young treasure hunter, and Mark Wahlberg is Victor “Sully” Sullivan, his aging mentor. Together they team up in a race against bad guy Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) to find the fabled Magellan expedition treasure.

The Old Guard (2020)

In The Old Guard, another Netflix original action movie, Charlize Theron is Andy, one part of an ancient team of immortal mercenaries who have been tasked with protecting the mortal world for centuries. After taking on a new mission and having their extraordinary powers exposed, the team must do everything they can to stop a group that is bent on replicating their powers and making money in the process. Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Matthias Schoenaerts also star.

6 Underground (2019)

Ryan Reynolds joined the ranks of Netflix originals in 6 Underground, an action thriller directed by the master of movie mayhem, Michael Bay. Reynolds is Magnet S. Johnson, a billionaire who fakes his own death so he can form an anonymous vigilante squad to take down terrorists or other bad entities that the government will not touch.

Johnson, who now goes by the moniker “One” then recruits five others who will fake their deaths to join him. Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Adria Arjona as Five, and Dave Franco round out the 6.

The Mother (2023)

In what comes as quite a surprise, Jennifer Lopez stars in this action movie, The Mother, which has her playing an assassin who is forced out of hiding to protect a daughter she has never met. In this Netflix original, Lopez, who had to give up her newborn daughter to protect her, comes back into her daughter’s life when an arms dealer is bent on revenge and uses Mother’s daughter as bait.
