Night at the Museum was a nice successful trilogy of movies for Ben Stiller (Zoolander) with the three action fantasy movies grossing $1.3 billion, despite the sequels making less than the first installment. Producer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Arrival, Free Guy) spoke to Collider about his new movie Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and discussed an animated entry to the Night at the Museum franchise.
Levy‘s production company 21 Laps Entertainment is producing the Night at the Museum animated movie, as it did with the previous entries with Ben Stiller. It is currently in production, and all is well as they chip away at making it. Even better, Shawn Levy thinks it should be able to release next year on Disney Plus.
Not too many details are known about the next entry in the Night at the Museum franchise. According to thedisinsider, the title will be Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again. It is not confirmed that it will star Ben Stiller, but the rumor is that it will focus on his character’s son, Nick Daley. The latter cautiously follows in his father’s footsteps of watching over the museum that comes to life when the sun goes down and the moon rises.
One thing the producer made sure to say about the animated edition of the Ben Stiller franchise is that he is very hands-on with it. During his interview with Collider, he said how happy he is with what he has seen from the animation, having screened two of the three acts. He also commented on how it stands on its own two feet while paying homage to the originals to strike a balance of new and old. It sounds like it will be a good entry point for newcomers while also being a refreshing edition for long-time fans.
Going along with what is rumored, as we don’t have any confirmations on the cast, we should see returning characters. The only thing is that we most likely won’t see the original actors voice their characters. That means we might not see Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, Ricky Gervais (After Life) as Dr. McPhee, or Owen Wilson (Loki) as Jedediah.
While we probably won’t see Ben Stiller, we do know who will write the screenplay. Experienced in animation and family-friendly shows, Ray DeLaurentis and William Schifrin from The Fairly OddParents will pen the script.
With or without working with Ben Stiller, Shawn Levy has plenty of huge projects with big stars in the works or are coming out. He currently is promoting Free Guy, which is set to release on August 13. Then there is the next season of Stranger Things as it recently came out with a teaser trailer and announced a 2022 release window. He will be directing The Adam Project with a star-studded lineup of Jennifer Garner (Yes Day), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame), Zoe Saldana (Avengers: Endgame), and rejoining him from Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds. Levy will also direct Starman and has been talking about doing a sequel to his 2011 movie, Real Steel with Hugh Jackman (Logan).
