Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Are Teaming Up Again For New Crime Thriller
In some major movie news, it has been announced that A-listers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will soon be joining their talents together to co-star in a new movie that will be titled RIP. Joe Carnahan will be writing and directing the movie that is planned to be a crime thriller that will begin shooting this Fall. Interest is supposedly already very high from distributors eager to claim the movie’s rights for when it is ready to release.
A Passion Project
The project is actually being produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company Artists Equity. So for the two actors to invest their own business resources into the project certainly makes it sound like it is a passion project for the both of them. Though details on the story are not being shared at this time, it must be something special to elicit that level of interest from the duo.
It Isn’t Animals
Unfortunately, details as a whole beyond the movie’s name are being kept under wraps this early into things. However, it is said that this collaboration between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck came together quite quickly, with this apparently developing in just the last few weeks.
It is said that the pair had actually wanted to do another crime thriller together called Animals earlier this year, but there were scheduling conflicts with Affleck’s production work on The Accountant 2.
Crime Thriller Veterans
While Animals has not been abandoned, it is being put on pause for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to focus on RIP instead. Evidently the two stars have been very enthusiastic about collaborating together in this genre.
Both actors certainly have been well-established in crime thriller movies, with The Departed being one of Damon’s most popular films, and The Town being one of Affleck’s most recognized films prior to his foray into the superhero genre.
Joe Carnahan
Writer and director Joe Carnahan also has established credentials in the genre, having worked on popular films like Smokin’ Aces and Narc. Between his experience in crime thrillers, and that of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, it sounds like a group prepared to create something that could be quite special.
Artists Equity
It is interesting to note that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company Artists Equity is still in its early days of proving itself. It only released its first film in 2023, Air.
While that film did garner very positive reviews, in terms of finances, it barely made back what it cost to make the movie and assuredly did not make a profit on such returns.
It remains to be seen if RIP can be the movie that really gets the ball rolling on Artists Equity being a financially successful production company.
Time will tell who else will become attached to the project before filming begins, but leading off with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is certainly an effective way to make a big splash right away.
Ben Affleck is still highly known of late in the public for his time as Batman, and Matt Damon was in recent Best Picture winner Oppenheimer, so both stars have a lot of momentum behind them heading into this project.
