Ben Affleck Reveals Good Will Hunting 2 Is Actually Real, But There’s A Twist
Ben Affleck says that he and Matt Damon were pitched a story for Good Will Hunting 2, but the pair of filmmakers decided to pass.
Ben Affleck can’t help but laugh at his bestie, Matt Damon, after being asked a question about the possibility of a Good Will Hunting 2. While on the red carpet at the premiere of his latest film, Air, the DC star answered a question posed by Variety in a clip that you can see below. The interviewer eagerly asks Affleck about a comment that Damon made surrounding a pitch for a sequel to the award-winning drama, with Affleck quickly blowing hopes out of the water by saying it’s not something that the duo will “pursue.”
In the short but smile-inducing clip, it’s hard not to smirk when Ben Affleck responds to Matt Damon’s not-so-tight-lip revelation about a pitch the duo received surrounding Good Will Hunting 2. “Matt is always telling stories that he should not be telling,” the Hypnotic star says with a smile on his face as the interviewer goes in for more information. Only adding that the pitch was “an idea of what might happen,” Affleck stammers a bit, repeating that the creative team will be passing on the idea before the clip cuts out.
In what would be a breakthrough title for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, 1997’s Good Will Hunting centered around a young man named Will (Damon) who has a genius-level IQ but sets his career as a janitor at MIT. After solving the answer to a challenging math equation, Will’s intellect is discovered by a Professor (Stellan Skarsgard) who takes the budding mind under his wing to help him grasp his full potential. Landing in trouble along the way, Will is given the choice of jail time or meeting with a therapist (Robin Williams) and chooses the latter.
The film hangs on an open ending, so perhaps the pitch that Ben Affleck received about Good Will Hunting 2 would show how the characters have carried on with their lives two decades later.
Penned by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Good Will Hunting would go on to be an awards circuit favorite that year, with the duo taking home the honor of Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. The night saw the title up for nine nominations, with Robin Williams also nabbing the golden man for the award of Best Supporting Actor. With critical acclaim coming from every direction and a semi-loose ending, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been fielding questions for years over whether they would move forward with a Good Will Hunting 2.
Even if Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won’t be teaming up to bring audiences Good Will Hunting 2, fans can still expect the dynamic duo to combine forces and deliver different stories. On the writing side, the pair most recently put pen to paper for Ridley Scott’s historical action film The Last Duel, in which they also starred. Although they didn’t write it together, both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will soon be celebrating the release of the biographical sports drama Air, in which they both starred with Affleck also directing.
Over the years, the two pals have brought audiences a slew of well-penned scripts and stories, as well as performances that have brought out their lovable dynamic. So, while Ben Affleck shut down the possibility of Good Will Hunting 2 happening anytime soon, there is certain to be plenty more material coming from the award-winning collaborators.
