While Ben Affleck’s been busy rekindling the “Bennifer” romance that first tantalized the world twenty years ago, an erotic thriller starring the 49-year-old actor is also being rekindled as it finally lands a release date. Deep Water, featuring Ben Affleck alongside Ana de Armas, was just given a release date on Amazon Prime in the UK. After three long years in limbo, the film’s theatrical release was pulled, but it now finds a new home on the streaming service this March.
With Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas at the center, Deep Water will also feature an ensemble cast with actor and playwright Tracy Letts, Fargo’s Rachel Blanchard, and Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery. The film also features Finn Wittrock, Jacob Elordi, Dash Mihok, Kristen Connolly, Jade Fernandez, Michael Braun, and Michael Scialabba. The illicit romance film follows the vile relationship between a married couple whose love has waned and the deadly consequences it has on the people closest to them.
Based on a novel by the same name, Patricia Highsmith, the author behind The Talented Mr. Ripley and Carol, penned the story in 1957. The production team behind Ben Affleck’s Deep Water has plenty of experience in the genre as well. The adaptation is co-written by Sam Levinson, the creator of HBO’s hit erotic teen series Euphoria. Similarly, Deep Water will be the first project from director Adrian Lyne, the man responsible for Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, in over 20 years.
Like many films, Ben Affleck’s Deep Water suffered delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although filming was completed before the beginning of the pandemic, the initial fall 2020 theatrical debut was pushed back. Next slated for an August 2021 release, Disney again delayed the film until this past January. Eventually, Disney pulled the film from theatrical release this past December without giving a reason or expected date of release at the time.
With no reason given for the theatrical pull, fans were left speculating whether or not the ironically salacious story behind Deep Water’s co-stars had anything to do with it. Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas began their own real-life romantic relationship after bonding onset of Deep Water. However, much like their characters, the relationship withered, and the duo officially split last January after a year together. Sources near and dear to the couple detailed the break-up as amicable. While the dismal industry outlook for theatres surely accounted for the theatrical pull, we are sure Ben Affleck was deeply relieved not to have to worry about any run-ins on the Red Carpet with his ex and current beau, JLo.
While Ben Affleck currently stays in the news largely because of his rekindled romance with Jennifer Lopez, the actor focuses his attention on love, family, and producing. As Ben leaves behind the mask of the Caped Crusader, the actor is again wrapped up in circulating rumors suggesting he might revisit another superhero portrayal, as the possibility of seeing him once again play Daredevil is promising given the multiverse variant potential in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As for producing, the actor has five projects slated for a future release.
