As far as movies depicting the Caped Crusader known as Batman, actor Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the superhero has been met with mixed reviews as part of the DC Universe. Robert Pattinson took on the role in this year’s The Batman, but rumors have begun swirling around that Affleck may take back his iconic character in possible new installments of the DC Comics film cannon. According to Geekosity, Affleck may have possibly signed on to three solo movies where his Batman is the star, and he may appear as the character in a cameo role in a different DC Comics movie as well.
While the rumors of Ben Affleck returning to theaters as Batman in the near future are still just rumors for now, there were a handful of similar conversations surrounding the return of Henry Cavill as Superman to the DC Extended Universe prior to this weekend. Dwayne Johnson had let the cat out of the bag about Cavill’s return while doing promotional work for Black Adam, and audiences were treated to a delightful post-credits scene in Johnson’s movie over the weekend where Cavill reprised his role as the Man of Steel.
With Henry Cavill back in the mix as Superman, it is maybe likely that audiences could see another showdown between Batman and Superman in future DC films, while the character of Black Adam may also be invited.
Warner Bros. Discovery has attempted to create a competitive edge with the Marvel Cinematic Universe by debuting new superhero films to please audiences, many of whom have preferred Marvel’s niche of comedic superhero portrayals in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Black Adam and next year’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods are DC Comics’ latest entries that are supposed to renew fan interest in the DC slate of superheroes, although 2023’s The Flash has already created a lot of problems for Warner Bros. with star Ezra Miller facing legal troubles amid some erratic behavior and controversial antics.
The studio might be venturing down the path of creating more stories for Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman to join other DC Comics heroes in remaking the image of the company overall.
Since the rumors ended up becoming true about Henry Cavill returning as Superman, a role he hadn’t played since 2017’s Justice League, the supposed rumors today about Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman aren’t out of the question. The current rumor mill is bursting about Ben Affleck possibly appearing in The Flash when it opens in theaters on June 23, 2023, and if that proves to be true, there’s no telling where his character could end up, including Jason Momoa’s Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
At any rate, it will be interesting to see if Ben Affleck ends up getting his own solo projects as Batman, as many of his portrayals have been alongside other DC Extended Universe characters like Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Amber Heard’s Mera, and Amy Adams’ Lois Lane.
