Beloved Fan-Favorite Comedian Finally Gets Long-Awaited Documentary

Mitch Hedberg, known for his role as the road manager in Almost Famous, is getting his own documentary at long last. Filming wrapped after a 5-year, 100-interview-long production process earlier this month. Hedberg had a dedicated cult following, beginning his career in Florida before moving to Seattle, where he launched his touring career.

Escalators Can Never Be Out Of Order

Criss-crossing the country, Mitch Hedberg connected with fellow comedians everywhere. To interview everyone who was close to him throughout his life, director Jeff Siegel conducted interviews with Hedberg’s fellow comedians, including Lewis Black, Jim Gaffigan, Margaret Cho, B.J. Novak, and Dave Attell. Also included in the Mitch Hedberg documentary are interviews with family and childhood friends, as well as archival footage and home movies.

This CD Is Gonna Be Called Hit Or Miss

An absurdist at heart, Hedberg was a master of deadpan punchline delivery and took audiences along for a surreal ride in his stand-up performances. Audiences were drawn into his retelling of life’s oddest contradictions through a unique lens and a series of baffling non-sequiturs. The Mitch Hedberg documentary promises to give his loyal fanbase and a new generation a glimpse into the popular comedian’s life.

A Burrito Is A Sleeping Bag For Ground Beef

Hedberg toured as a stand-up comedian beginning in the Pacific Northwest in 1996 and then moved to LA where he directed Los Enchiladas!, a film about the beleaguered staff of a fictional Midwest chain restaurant. He also had several appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, had a deal with Fox to create a sitcom, and was called the next Seinfeld by TIME Magazine. Fans can hope to see some of his most iconic footage from these ventures in the upcoming Mitch Hedberg documentary.

Part of the reason fans loved Hedberg so much is that he connected with them in a genuine way. He encouraged the public to send him pictures of themselves posing with him at his shows, allowing fans to share their treasured moments with him. He is said to have bought and delivered an air conditioner to a group of college students in Florida who had shared with him that their dorm room was too hot.

Haven’t Slept For 10 Days…That Would Be Too Long

In addition to his stand-up, writing, directing, and acting, Mitch also released three stand-up albums. The Mitch Hedberg documentary will cover the time of his life when he recorded Strategic Grill Locations, released in 1999, and Mitch All Together, released in 2003 and was officially certified gold in 2021. His last album, Do You Believe in Gosh, was released in 2008, posthumously, by Comedy Central Records and contained 40 minutes of new material recorded before his death.

A Genius That Was Taken Too Soon

Mitch tragically succumbed to a drug overdose in March of 2005 at 37 years old. This heartbreaking loss was caused by a protracted struggle with drug addiction, which he had been contending with for years. While Hedberg poked fun at his drug use, most famously with the joke, “I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.” his death at such a young age belies the seriousness of his addiction. The Mitch Hedberg documentary will hopefully finally tell the story of a life that so deserves to be told.
