The Bear Star Is Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Ayo Edebiri from The Bear has joined the cast of Marvel's The Thunderbolts.
Ayo Edebiri is having a great year. She broke onto the scene in 2022’s best show The Bear, and now Deadline is reporting that she’s nabbed a role in the MCU’s upcoming Thunderbolts movie. Her role is being kept under wraps for now.
Ayo Edebiri will join the already-stacked Thunderbolts cast which includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. The MCU film will be directed by Jake Schreier with a screenplay by Eric Pearson. Thunderbolts has a similar concept to DC’s Suicide Squad, with villains and anti-heroes going on missions for the government.
Ayo Edebiri has landed her first major studio picture with Thunderbolts. Her previous credits include indie films and a starring role in the critically acclaimed FX series The Bear. Edebiri has been nominated for a Critic Choice Award for her performance as the up-and-coming chef Sydney Adamu.
Ayo Edebiri will also surely be getting some Emmy attention for her role in The Bear, which was recently renewed for a second season. It’s no surprise that she’s getting offers for major films like Thunderbolts. It’ll be interesting to see if she’s being set up as a hero or villain in the upcoming MCU film, or if she’ll have some other part to play.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Ayo Edebiri plays a well-known character from the comics in Thunderbolts, setting her up for multiple MCU appearances in the future. Knowing Marvel, we might even get a surprise introduction to her character in a project before the Thunderbolts film. Marvel always likes to tee up future projects with their post-credits scene and TV shows, so anything could happen.
Before we see Ayo Edebiri in Thunderbolts, we’ll be seeing her in the upcoming high school sex comedy Bottoms. Bottoms follows two unpopular queer students who start a fight club to try and impress and hook up with cheerleaders. Bottoms is directed by Emma Seligman and also stars Rachel Sennott, Marshawn Lynch, Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, Miles Fowler, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Punkie Johnson.
While we wait to see Ayo Edebiri in Thunderbolts, Marvel will keep us plenty busy with all of its upcoming projects. First up, we’ll get introduced to an evil variant of Jonathan Majors’ Kang in Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania which hits theaters on February 17. In 2023 alone, we’ll also be seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Secret Invasion, Loki season 2, Ironheart, What If…? season 2, and X-Men 97′.
If Ayo Edebiri ends up having a big role in Thunderbolts, there’s always a chance we could see her pop up again in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. In the meantime, you can stream all of The Bear on Hulu and look forward to season 2 this summer. Thunderbolts will be hitting theaters on July 26, 2024.
