Batman Ninja 2 Is Officially Happening

The sequel will be produced by a collaboration between veterans Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi, along with the staff at Warner Bros. Japan. Fans will recall that Mizusaki directed the first Batman Ninja; the project wowed comic book and anime devotees, who have certainly seen their share of unique sensibilities tackling legacy IP, with its distinctive vision. Kazuki Nakashima will pen the script of Batman Ninja 2, while character designs will be handled by Takashi Okazaki, who’ll set his art to scored music by Yugo Kanno. 

This highly creative trio, all of whom contributed so much success to the original film, will return to the fray to ensure more compelling anime Batman goodness. 

While specifics surrounding the plot and nuances of casting remain shrouded in secrecy, Warner Bros. Has confirmed, to the delight of many, that Koichi Yamadera will reprise his voice acting and handle Batman. The actor’s work in the 2018 title was widely lauded, and critics enjoyed the depth and gravitas he lent to the tried-and-true Dark Knight character. 

Hopefully and helpfully, more information about Batman Ninja 2 will be unveiled at the upcoming 2024 Anime Expo, which will take place in Los Angeles this July. The event will likely offer fans a deeper and more instructive insight into vital details—the story-line, additional cast members, and, who knows, maybe even a first look. 

The original Batman Ninja feature film employed a novel twist on the character and brand, transporting Batman and his slew of notorious adversaries to feudal Japan. How? Simply through the convenient and helpful Gorilla Grodd’s Quake Engine time displacement machine. 

In this fascinating alternate timeline, a timeline in some measure to resume in Batman Ninja 2, Batman squared off against Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn, and other iconic baddies of the universe—but all re-imagined via a winsome feudal Japanese twist. 

Global audiences praised the project for its bold, innovative approach, seamlessly fusing Western superhero staples with Eastern storytelling and art styles. The film’s success spawned a manga adaptation that was released in 2020, expanding the Batman Ninja universe even further. 

Obviously, the announcement surrounding Batman Ninja 2, Batman Ninja vs Yakuza League, has garnered significant excitement. Because the first film’s departure from the conventional superhero tropes was such a breath of fresh air, the sequel is slated to push the envelope further.

It’s exciting to think about how Japan’s Yakuza organized crime world will interface with Batman, to boot. And with the involvement of the original creative team, fans should feel reassured the sequel will retain the same high standards as the original—terrific animation, compelling screenwriting, and striking character design.
