Batman Goes Full Lovecraft In Trailer For The Doom That Came To Gotham
The firs trailer for Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham showcases Batman in a Lovecraftian world.
While the plan for the film division of the DC Universe is still in flux, DC is continuing to release some great animated features. The newest is a story called Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, which showcases a more Lovecraft version of The Caped Crusader, as many fantastical elements have been brought in. The trailer, which you can see below, showcases many redesigns of classic villains as well.
Batman speaks about “the great doom is coming” to Gotham, which follows an ancient warrior who has risen. The warrior talks about “the sins of the father are heaped upon the son” which we can assume means that Bruce Wayne will have to answer for something that Thomas Wayne has done. He also shows up in the trailer, though we are not sure if he is going to be appearing as some sort of trick of the mind Bruce is under.
We get shots of the various villains that Batman has dealt with before, including a more lizard-looking and frightening version of Killer Croc in The Doom That Came to Gotham. Also, it appears that Ra’s Al Ghul looks like more of a wizard, similar to Jafar from Aladdin, which we aren’t sure is a good or a bad thing. Also, Mr. Freeze might be one of the weaker redesigns, as he sort of looks like a cross between Mr. Freeze and The Penguin.
The Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham animated feature was based on the comic series by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, and Troy Nixey. It is based in the Lovecraftian 1920s style, which will see Batman be a bit more focused on logic and science to take down the ancient evil that has awoken in Gotham. The animated feature is being co-directed by Christopher Berkeley and Sam Liu.
Berkeley famously worked on Teen Titans, The Batman series, and Young Justice. Liu famously directed Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, and worked on The Batman series. Jase Ricci, Mike Mignola, and Richard Pace are credited as the writers for the movie, with Ricci handling the screenplay for Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.
Interestingly, though Jensen Ackles has emerged as the voice of Batman in many of the animated features lately, he is absent from this one. Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham features a voice cast that includes David Giuntoli as Batman, Gideon Adlon as Oracle, Christopher Gorham as Oliver Queen, Jason Marsden as Dick Grayson, Patrick Fabian as Harvey Dent, John DiMaggio as James Gordon, Navid Negahban as Ra’s Al Ghul, and many more.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham will officially be released on digital, 4K, and Blu-ray on March 28, 2023. This is certainly a new Batman tale that we have not seen before, and we can’t wait to see the other redesigned villains. Though Clayface is not listed in the voice cast, we would hope that he is going to be involved, as he might be one of the more Lovecraftian villains in the entirety of Batman’s Rogues Gallery.
