Leslie Grace recently took to Instagram to make a bittersweet about her work on the canceled DC movie Batgirl. The behind-the-scenes photos and videos might be the most any of us see of the movie, so we’ll have to take what we can get. At the very least, it does seem like the cast and crew had a blast making the doomed project.

While it’s not much, we do get a few different shots of Leslie Grace in the Batgirl suit. There’s also what looks like an action shot of Grace and Jacob Scipio’s character. Grace completes the post with a heartbreaking video of her singing an impressive rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” while trying on the suit.

The cancellation of Batgirl was a huge shock to everyone, and it likely surprised the cast and crew most of all. Following the Warner Discovery merger, CEO David Zaslav was looking to cut costs and Batgirl was one of the major projects to be sacrificed. Apparently, the film was cut in favor of a tax write-off, despite the movie being in post-production with $90 million already sunk into it.

It seems very unlikely that any of us will ever see Batgirl, so we’ll just have to enjoy this post from Leslie Grace instead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there have been some insider screenings of Batgirl before the footage is stored away forever, but in order to keep the tax benefits Warner Discovery can never profit off the film. Meaning it’s pretty unlikely that it will ever be released.

Really, there are only two ways that Batgirl sees the light of day. Either someone would have to leak the footage or Warner Discovery has to choose to release the film and pay back the taxes. Both scenarios seem pretty unlikely.

Batgirl would have starred Leslie Grace as Barabara Gordon as she took on the mantle of Batgirl to fight crime. Along with Grace, the film would feature J.K. Simmons reprising his role as Commissioner Gordon and Brendan Fraser as the villain. The film would have also re-introduced Michael Keaton’s Batman to the new DC universe of films.

While it’s unfortunate that we’ll be missing out on Batgirl altogether, Michael Keaton will still be reprising his Batman role in future DC projects. Although Zaslav has been liberal with his cancellations of projects, there are a decent number of planned films that are surviving the bloodbath. Michael Keaton will definitely be reprising the role in The Flash and apparently, he may appear in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as well.

At the very least, we can hope that DC Films can find a way to bring Leslie Grace’s Batgirl character into the fold in future films. Whether that happens or not, the DCEU will continue to march on. The next film on their lineup will be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, which will also feature the Justice Society of America.

Black Adam is set to hit theaters on October 21. We won’t see another DC film after that until Spring 2023. In March, you’ll be able to see Shazam! Fury of the Gods followed by The Flash in June, Blue Beetle in August, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December.
